What's new

Dante Exum's "BAD" play is being blown way out of proportion.

I hear he has the lowest PER is history for players with the same number of minutes played. 1033rd out of 1033 players.

Maybe I'm doing this wrong, but it looks like he is the 2nd worst ever, behind some guy named "Yakhouba Diawara".

Dante will pass him in MP pretty soon anyway. Of course, he could pass "Bob Thornton" in PER if he plays a little better. We should sticky this thread so we can track his progress (regress?). ;-)

Small sample size. Why don't the other players trust him? Because he's shooting 34%/31%.

While I agree we might be overly critical of his defense, the numbers don't lie on offense. Opponents don't have to guard his shot. He can occasionally get to the hoop as he has straight ahead speed. But that's it.

I'm envious of the teams we play who have great young talent. DL had a great pick in Gobert and a strong one in Hood. Other than that, his draft record is weak: Burke, Exum and Lyles as lottery picks. Traded up for Neto. Jazz bring in 70-80 guys for workouts and it just hasn't paid off with any real finds.

Also dont forget that he could draft and stash Jokic but instead chose to swap a early 2nd rounder for cash

Dante isn't playing great there's no doubt about that, but there was always the expectation that he would struggle this year (what many people dubbed his real rookie year). He just needs to not let it get to him mentally and then hit the gym with Hayward every day.

His PER this year is the same as Boris Diaw, and close to plenty of rookies so I'm not gonna get too worked up about it.

Maybe one day he'll develop into someone who's better than the worst rookies in the league.

part of the heartbreak with dante was the unknown elements of his transition from Australian high school to the NBA. There were many, including some national media guys, saying he'd be a killer instinct star, ala Kobe Bryant with a passing game.

To be fair, to see our #5 pick (frankly, probably our last top 5 pick for the foreseeable future), coming up as one of the worst rotational players in the league SHOULD be disheartening to everyone here. Injuries or not, there are plenty of inexperienced players who manage to provide value. Yes he was hurt for some of it, but the dude has had like 3+ years of watching and studying NBA ball (dont forget his extended pre-draft training/tutoring in cali). He still looks lost and hesitant like 95% of his minutes..

It's too bad Exum is worth nothing. I wish we could get a late 1st round pick for him.

It is also important to note that following the ACL injury, Exum has clearly lost much of his lateral quickness, and he now struggles to stay in front of his man (he gets beat every other play!). His shot has regressed as well, but that is probably fixable. Overall, he is worse this year than he was as a rookie, despite his improvement driving to the basket (because there was no way to go but up).

When we conducted a poll about Exum's potential during his rookie season, I said his ceiling is a solid starter. Most thought he would be an all-star. Now, I'd be satisfied if he grew into a good backup.
