Derrick Favors by the numbers

I am not a Favors hater nor a Favors apologist. I see him as a young player with tons of potential who sometimes plays great, and sometimes looks lost. Potential is a dangerous word, it gets fans to see things that aren't really so and can get NBA coaches & GMs fired.

Right now in his second season Favors numbers look almost identical to Kwame Brown's numbers in his 2nd season. see here:

If that doesn't make you nervous, then you got more nerve than me. My biggest concern is not his physical skills, its mental. Hopefully he can grow out of those little lapses. But until then, I'm not ready to crown him as the next Jazz

Random comparisons don't make me nervous at all. I think Favors can already be counted on to be a net positive in the game for the Jazz. Even when he is offensively impotent (which isn't rare), he always is a defensive force to be reckoned with. The game looks very different with him on the floor, and teams quickly adjust to his inside presence by commencing a chuck-fest. I think a 20 year old who's already the best defender on the team, and shows great offensive promise, is something to be excited about.

I think a big reason he has struggled at times this year is because he has had some serious bad luck with fouls. Most of it his fault but it also seemed a lot were going against him even it were close. It seemed like the refs were piling on at times. I think that may have been the reason why he has been hesitant at times and hasnt been at his best always. He is trying to figure out what he can and can't do. He will be fine.

I agree. And can you imagine how much Sloan would gush over his defense? A big man covering the P&R like he does. I wonder if Sloan were still coach if he would trade AJ's offense for Favors defense and bring Al off the bench.

Are you crazy? Have you ever watched Sloan coach?

No way does he play the defensive guy over the offensive guy . There was always better defensive options on the bench during the Boozer and Okur era and Sloan never would bench one of them. Jerry preached a lot of defense but he favored the offensive players always. His approach was try to get good offensive players to play defense and not the other way around.

Corbin is basically Sloan junior. He holds the same views on vets over rooks and their rotations.

Sloan would have done the same thing.

There isn't a more laughable myth on Jazzfans right now than the one that "Corbin is just like Sloan" and "Sloan always played vets over rookies," Funny the effect time has on people's minds.

...but back to the original topic...

Favors has a change to be a top-5 defensive big in the league - he's that good. He could not improve his offensive game one more ounce and I think he would still average a double-double as a starting PF/C functioning as a dive-man who crashes the boards.

If he develops into a competent (not necessarily a go-to scorer but a guy who can consistently score on the block) he'll be an elite player.
Skill-wise, he's got a left-shoulder jump hook and a right-shoulder turnaround that is still a work in progress - but something he's trying to incorprate into his game. Lately on the left block we've seen an aggressive swing through and baseline drive which will open up that face-up 12-foot jumpshot if he develops it. He's got 2-3 post moves that could make him a great player if he develops them. Instead of trying to get better at everything in the offseason, I'd like to see him focus on one move (ideally his left-shoulder jump hook), and work on it to the point it becomes his go-to move.

Just like many other young NBAers, Favors has tons of physical skills, but lacks the FOCUS*to play at*a*CONSISTANT level. Defensively, he has games where he's plagued by silly fouls. Offensively, he's lacking the consistant post moves he needs to be an elite player. The problem with using Jefferson off the bench is who's my post player now? Millsap is too small to be consistant from the post, and Favors lacks the moves.
Just gotta be patient and let these young pups grow...

This is the best post of the thread.

But seriously, when nerd tells me that I'm wrong, I'll actually listen. When GVC and nerd tell me I'm wrong, then I'm probably very wrong.

I guess there's a first time for everything, though. Favors blows.

How about I tell you you're wrong .. and maybe you feel redeemed?

Am I the only one who isn't on the Favors bandwagon? I just don't see why people are all over his nuts. He isn't really that good, doesn't look to have much potential, and plays two or three mediocre games for every awesome game he has. I'm not trying to be a dick here or hating on him -- I actually like him -- but I just don't get it. He's a great backup, nothing more.

10/10

That's funny right there.

To the point though, I'm not trolling. Also, I don't look at stats (unless I'm writing up something about Chucker J. Smiles -- can you blame me?) so I have no idea what his numbers are. Frankly, I don't care either. He's better than Millsap and Jefferson? And people think I'm trolling...

I just don't see it, guys. He has piss poor handle on the ball. He has ZERO post moves. He has no mid-range game. He is a head case. Granted, he can rebound and occasionally has a break-out game, but give me a break, he is not a starter on many teams, and certainly not the Jazz. Like I said, I don't look at stats, I watch the games. He will always be "good", but will never sniff an all-star game.

Sig-Worthy.

:)

Interesting bump, and I still stand by my original statement. He sure beats the snot out of Weenus Koonter though, which is surprising.
