So Waiters believes that him being a Muslim compels him to sit out the anthem. Islam did not have this rule back when I was a Muslim! And while I don't care whether he observes the national anthem or not, I think citing Islam as the reason is disingenuous and supremely obnoxious. If you have a philosophical opposition to the some aspect of the U.S.'s behavior, or national anthems in general, then just say so. Coward.
 
There is numerous muslim players in NBA including our own Kanter and nobody as far as I know ( except Mahmud Abdul Rauf in 90's ) ever tried to use their muslim faith as reason to skip anthem. Faith or no faith when they get hefty fines they start obeying NBA rules. When ****y player like Waiters tries to do it he should look in history and see hall of famer muslim like Olajuwon who never used his faith for any excuses.
 
He's an idiot chucker. I'm sure Lebron is already regretting his "Decision." Waiters is essentially Delonte West 2.0 for that team.

Without a bench or center, that team will struggle to get out of the east let alone win the championship. Duncan at age 100 in a wheelchair would still dominate Love and Varejao. At least Birdman could get in Duncan's way and waste a foul or two.

Doubt it. Even if that team has a hard time gelling, they have plenty of room to adjust. Regardless of the fact that Jazzfanz has declared Irving worthless, there's no doubt he could fetch another all-star in trade, if he's determined to play for his numbers rather than wins. Hate to say it, but for the Lebron haters who are waiting for a disaster, things will come together for that team. They might not win a title this year, but that team is sitting pretty for the next few years.

As for Waiters, he is now claiming that the story was made up.

That's pretty much what annoys me about the story. "It's my religion" has pretty much become the real world equivalent of a get out of jail free card.

Why can't I take a **** in the middle court? It is required by my religion, which I just made up. I find it extremely offensive that I'm being discriminated against because of my faith.

If you get annoyed by this kind of suckling up to power, then you're doomed to be annoyed. It's part of the fabric of liberal society.

When I was a young man, I took a trip to Boston with a friend and his family. This was my first opportunity to wander around in a big city. Once, when I was waiting for an opportunity to cross the street, a taxi cab honked angrily at another taxi cab. Wise beyond his years, my friend said, "damn, if you're a taxi cab driver and you let yourself get upset like that at other cars -- but especially other taxis -- then aren't you basically consigning yourself to hell?" I understood him to mean that taxi cab drivers don't get to agree to only some of the behaviors they encounter in the street; the decision to drive is a decision to run into a multiplicity of things outside their control.

Bitching about that kind of suckling up to power (pitiful as it may be) reminds me of that honk. That behavior is so ubiquitous.

I think religion has pretty much always had this aspect to it. I just think that these days more and more people(secular and religious alike) have had enough of it.

Don't atheists/scientists/freethinkers whine the loudest when they have to say "under god" in the pledge of allegiance? Do people really care if a pastafarian puts a spaghetti strainer on their head? When a Muslim doesn't do pledge of allegiance? When an atheist doesn't say under god? I am more of a live and let live kind of guy.

Plenty of room to adjust? They have three guys at max or near-max deals and little to no assets outside of those guys.

Watiers' excuse is dumb but to me he has every right to skip it as long as he is not disrespectful towards it. But if the league punishes him, they are even dumber.
 
I am an atheist but I proudly sing "God keep our land, glorious and free" during our National Anthem. Never ever crossed my mind to skip those words even if I do not believe in it whatsoever.

Funny, I'm kind of the opposite. I'm not atheist but I do have problems with some of the lines in my national anthem. Though I also have never ever thought of acting against it. But I'd certainly would want to have the freedom to not sing/attend/like it.

I agree actually. He shouldn't need a reason, and he shouldn't be fined. And he most certainly shouldn't use a fake "it's my religion" excuse.
