Why on earth would we want to keep an athletic guard with some character and a little bit of a knack to put the basketball thru the net?

He gives us a lot of options which is a nice turn of events for any of our not-main players. I think everything is in play but this is definitely a basketball decision for right now.
Assuming an extension for Royce doesn’t materialize (which it shouldn’t, at this point), Clarkson’s expiring gets us under the cap which means the Jazz can offer decent money to good, veteran players looking for a last decent payday relative to other contender that might just have the MLE.
I also think the Jazz may be able to have a conversation about Aaron Gordon, now. For whatever that is worth.
Again, we got options.
Lou Williams has crossed my mind, here.I posted this in another thread, but I knew Clarkson was scoring around 15 ppg but just realized it was in only 23 minutes. I assumed it’d be closer to 30. His points per minute have been pretty high his whole career. Maybe he can be our Lou Williams.
Until the past couple years, he was a volume scorer putting up big numbers on crappy teams. Now everyone is kissing his ***. I’ll go optimistic and hope maybe this can be Clarkson.Lou Williams has crossed my mind, here.
The Jazz have Royce’s rights, it’s up to the Jazz if Royce leaves. If we were going to get a discount in an extension, it would’ve already happened. Furthermore, extending him zaps even the possibility of cap, where not extending him could mean retaining him AND getting a player in free agency.Being just under the salary cap is pretty sub optimal. Unless you can REALLY get under the cap. Losing Royce and Clarkson for whatever we dredge from the river would be pretty silly, especially as the free agent class next year is pretty sorry. We can keep Clarkson (or whatever we flip him for,) keep Royce, sign Favors, and probably something else as Favors probably doesn't command the full MLE. We will have to go over the luxury tax at some point, but I'm not terribly worried about it right now.
Worst case scenario that could be Favors and Crowder. The Jazz could have ~$11 million in cap space plus the room MLE which couldn’t be said previously. It’s just a fact and a good thing.
Or Favors and Gallinari. Or Clarkson and Favors. The Jazz have options. Exum’s contract was a total ****ing millstone and this is a coup even if Clarkson is suddenly terrible. I figured it would take two seconds just to dump Exum for a garbage player.Worst case scenario that could be Favors and Crowder.
Feeling better by the minute.Or Favors and Gallinari. Or Clarkson and Favors. The Jazz have options. Exum’s contract was a total ****ing millstone and this is a coup even if Clarkson is suddenly terrible. I figured it would take two seconds just to dump Exum for a garbage player.
