Careful what you wish for.

The Democrats have an advantage in terms of the presidency because of how the states are divided. It is hard to say what the results would be if we went by popular vote. A lot of conservatives in New York and California don't bother voting. Looking at just California I'm going to guess that if you split it into 3 states you would get a swing state, a blue state, and a red state(depending on where thee borders were). Ever been to Redding?

Changing to the popular vote may not give you the political result that you think it will.

Nonetheless, the electoral college is an archaic nonsensical system that needs to go. I've yet to hear a good reason of why it should stick around.

Well it seems like without it middle America would have no voice at all in Presidential elections.

How so? Every citizen would have the same weight as every other.

It just seems like high population states would have much more power if they just did straight popular vote. That's the reason they have the electoral college, right? To balance the power of the states?

I'm not arguing for it/against it, just thought that was the reason.

And if you are paranoid, you could say it was designed to keep the white vote stronger since it's pretty easy to predict that minorities are usually grouped in certain areas and not spread out through the country equally.

Right now the high population states have way more power than the lower populated states. Going popular vote would mean that each individual vote counts the exact same.

When have I EVER said I want to block CA from the voting?

I think you said something like "if californias votes didn't count then trump would have won by even more."

Well ya, fewer people would have less say than more people. That's the way every other democracy works.

There are different opinions on why the electoral college existed in the first place. I don't think the "small state protection" argument works since electors are based on population anyway, and almost all presidents come from big states (more exposure and more supporters).

I think it exists as a compromise between northern and slave states. The slave states had a huge population, most of whom could not vote. By providing population based electors, the slave states had much more weight (since slaves count as population but not as voters).

So now we're stuck with an undemocratic and convoluted system that makes no sense, and that was established for **** reasons.

Got a link or should I just text him?

I went back and tried to find it again... can't remember where I saw it.

Basically said we need to get behind the President and be supportive so he can concentrate on doing the best job possible.

I just drove by the SLC capital to go for a hike I was surprised at how many people were there protesting.
