I'm not that big a Podz fan. I think he's fine, but he's not really the centerpiece of a Lauri deal. His versatility--pass/dribble/shoot--gives him some appeal, but I think he's your 5th - 7th player in your rotation.

The picks are the centerpiece. The other stuff is still important though.

I just can't think of many examples of teams with like 5 rookies/2nd year players in the rotation that won 25+ games. Unless one of the rookies/2nd year guys are transcendent Wemby types.

Even with 1 vet gone do you think all of them will be in the rotation? I don't think all 5 will be and Hardy tends to be hard on young guys. We have 6 guys locked into rotation right now and only Keyonte is a 1st/2nd year guy. Trade one away and we still have some competition for rotation guys. We also have to sign one more guy after Lauri to get to the floor right? Plus who are we getting back if we trade a vet? A young guy who needs to play? A worse vet?

But you're right that's a lot of young guys. But I can't think of a team in recent memory set up like us to even compare. With so many young guys and then a player of Lauri's caliber and a few decent vets or better in Sexton.

I don't think a young guy needs to be transcendent to make us win more than 25 with Lauri and the other vets. If 2 guys are positive players even role players, that makes a huge difference. Like if Hendricks can come in and play solid defense and hit his open shots that helps win games. But probably a lot depends on Sexton and/or Keyonte.

But I also know you and I view Lauri different.

I doubt we view Lauri that differently. It might be our view of Keyonte that may be the most different. Not that I don't like him but his on/off numbers were putrid... not surprising for a rookie lead guard. Even if he takes a leap he will still be very much a guy that helps you lose more than he helps you win. He'd have to take a few steps to really push winning.

I just think young players are detrimental to winning... even when solid. I think Key/Taylor are firmly in the rotation. I'd guess Cody gets some spot minutes and Flip too. Once you move Kessler or Clarkson I think Collier/Flip/Brice are regular rotation pieces. Its almost not a choice by Hardy at that point. He may play Bazley or Juzang more but those guys are kind of developing as well.

The west is just so tough... remove 1 of Sexton and Kessler and we are almost surely bottom 5... remove 1 of the JCs and I think chances are pretty good you are bottom 5.

Also one of the best rebounding guards in the NBA and one of the highest IQ rookie contract players in the NBA. He's more like a very high end 4th guy.

They want to upgrade but they basically can't without giving up significant assets and he does help them win, so any upgrade would only have a marginal impact on their regular season win total.

Depth is a bigger issue for them as they are paying MLE sized contracts to two guys (Vanderbilt/Vincent) who would probably struggle to get much more than 4 million per year in the current market.
