Hate to say it, but I'm not sure I disagree with this. What's weird is how Favors injuries seem to just pop up. You don't really see them happen on the court... all of the sudden he is down for the count. And they don't have any timetable for a return.

He was, however, one of the best offensive bigs in the league, and I believe there was a year or two you could have made an argument for thee best scoring big. I like Lyles and his potential, but let's not jump the gun and start declaring him a future HOFer just yet. I don't think it's a given by any means that his ability to shoot threes will outweigh what the team loses defensively.

Look, I LOVE Favors. I was very vehement in my support in past threads about trade rumors involving Derrick. I'm not saying dump him this season. But please, anyone...tell me HOW Utah can pay Favors, Gobert, Hayward, Hood and Exum (when everyone is off their rookie deal). Just the starters. I'm not including Lyles or any other subs. All five of those players WILL get big offers. I guess if Exum flames out, there's some savings there. Hood has already shown enough scoring potential for other teams to want him. Just look at the offer Harrison Barnes got.
Hard choices will need to be made. Burks is a goner when his contract expires.Lyles is going to be cheaper to keep than Derrick. And unlike the Boozer situation. Utah has a rim protector in Gobert. What they need around Rudy are shooters. Lyles offers better range. I'd love for Utah to keep Derrick. But I just don't see how they can - unless it comes at the expense of another key player.
Good points. And I do agree for the most part. However, do you really think Rudy is all we need on the defensive side? Did you see him during the olympics? I think many of us see Rudy as this amazing rim protector, but in my opinion in what I see, he is only as good as the players around him. It's my belief that Favors with Gobert, and Gobert with Favors is what makes Gobert's defense what it is. My fear is when a switch occurs and Lyles can't keep up laterally and that brings Gobert away from the rim. Kanter was proof of this, and I fear the same with Lyles.

Fair enough, but there are quite a few Jazz fans who have already convinced themselves that the team would be better with Lyles replacing Favors, and I believe they are underrating Favors and/or jumping the gun with Lyles.
Who are you talking about? I think Stifle summed it up pretty well and he didn't even mention Favors' injuries.

If you can sign Favors, you sign Favors. At worst case he has no trade value unsigned. And people need to realize that there will never be an offseason like the last where every single team can sign a max free agent. Next year 12 teams can (if they let other players go), the year after that it will me much less. In an world when 5 or 6 teams can sign a max free agent, Harrison Barnes does not get a max contract. Not every single player on the Jazz will get a max contract unless they win a championship.

That's what my plan would be. Retain your talent, and figure it out later. The days of the unmovable 6 year albatross contracts are over. Resign him for 4 years, if Lyles keeps improving, you move Favors in a couple years for either a good wing or high picks. GM'ing 101.
