Its a centuries old ethnic and religious conflict....

For centuries the region was part of the Ottoman Empire, they had a financial interest in not forcibly converting all of their subjects to Islam, non Muslims paid more tax, so the various churches became not just centers for religious culture but language, national and ethnic identity and so on. So while the churches became centers of nationalism and rivalry between the various ethnic groups in the area, they were mostly repressed by either the Ottoman's or Austria-Hungarian Empire, they were briefly independent between the wars i think, then fell under Soviet influence. When Tito's Communist Yugoslavia fell apart the nationalism that had been stored and perpetuated in their various churches exploded, tearing apart the region in a genocidal civil war. Anyway that's the best way I understand it but i'm hardly an expert on the region, i don't know much about anything anyway.

for sure, Spain will slaughter Russians... Uruguay on the other hand knows how to defend very well, and will be hard to break. I expect them to beat Portugal and finally end their run of luck.
