Van Gundy seems to be all about win now. He's their GM. They'll match any offers on Jackson or else why would they have given up on all that assets to get him?
 
Burke is a back-up at least. He's replacing Jennings and Augustine even if they re-sign Jackson.

Look at Detroit's situation overall:

* New coach/GM in Van Gundy. Player turn-over is inevitable.
* They didn't have a first-round pick last year. The two years prior they were 8th just like this year and got Drummond and Caldwell-Pope.
* They cut bait on Josh Smith.
* They're losing Greg Monroe in free agency.
* Tayshaun Prince doesn't want to be there, and I think he's a free agent too.
* Jackson is a restricted free agent who underperformed this past year.
* They've got other old guys to replace in Caron Butler, Joel Anthony, Cartier Martin and John Lucas III.
* There's a talent drop-off after the top 7 in this draft if you're not sold on Winslow. Thereafter beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

I don't think they're in win-now mode. I think they're rebuilding around Drummond and have precious little talent to do it.

If anyone should be open to trading their pick for extra assets, it's Detroit this year.

Jackson also didn't play well, and it's not 100% certain they'll re-sign him.

Monroe is unrestricted, so they'll need a starting-caliber PF. That's something they can get at 12, while picking up another asset. Either Oubre or Looney is also likely to be there at 12, if they want a wing to replace Tayshaun Prince.

Depends on what you mean by star. Curry/Harden level--maybe not. But I don't think it's unreasonable to say he could make a few All-Star teams.

I think scouts and nba personnel are getting better at throwing out misinformation. One of the nba scouts that was talking to chad ford was saying Stanley Johnson is completely overhyped and wasn't very dominant this year... His numbers looked good to me as an 18 year old.

I don't think they do it with every prospect but if I liked a guy who had potential to slip to me I'd throw out some garbage about him too.
 
The thing is, all scouts probably aren't good at their job just like not all coaches/players are good at their job.

Russell going to be a God.
 
It seems to me Tomic is also a candidate to be traded. He's one of the top centers in Europe, if not the top right now. He wants to play in the league, but backing up Gobert might not be ideal for him. I feel like he could factor into a trade this off-season. A few teams drafting ahead of us would do well to pick him up.

Tomic + 12 + 2nd-rd pick should move us up to 8 at least.

Plus, we still have Pleiss.

I don't think they remember that Harden wasn't very explosive in college either. He had a slower pace than he has now and had an old school kind of game. These guys develop and get stronger and faster. Russell's only knock is he is a little slow and not a big leaper. He's such a good shooter passer and creator though. Put him with some good bigs in a PnR and it will be ugly. The nba game also creates a better balanced floor which will open more driving lanes for him.

Him and towns have the most star potential to me.
