Who do you like between Paul Reed and Jalen Smith? I think one of them will be on the board around 24.
I think the Jazz should have them work out against one another. Otherwise, I think Paul Reed has more potential. He's the better and more versatile defender, meaning he could play next to Gobert and play multiple positions. He also has better ball skills for a system that shares the ball and uses passing, cutting and multiple pick-and-rolls.
That said, I think the Jazz should offer #24 + Royce to move up to the mid-teens--either Minnesota at #16 or Orlando at #15. Then the Jazz could take Pokusevski or Saddiq Bey. Royce is mostly a designated defender who has very low usage on offense. The Jazz might be able to replace that with Miye Oni off the bench next season. It might be worth making this move to get someone with more upside in the draft. Royce is on a fair extension for the next 3 years, and in a draft that's pretty flat outside the top 10, a team might go for Royce + 24 to shore up two positions instead of one.
If the Jazz stay at #24, I think Reed is a real possibility, assuming he doesn't bomb his interview and the Jazz think they can help his shooting.

Trading Royce opens a new hole on the roster that is hard to fill. We can't easily replace the only 3&D player on our roster. Not a good idea. Unless we are giving up entirely on this core and prepared to move on from Gobert/Ingles/Conley/Bogey too.

I think Oni can match 80% of Royce's defense against guards and wings, and we'd bring in someone else to guard 4s. Royce's usage on offense is so low that it doesn't really matter. Royce only takes 5 FGAs per game. Last year, it was 4 FGAs.
The Jazz would have to give up something to move into Poku/Bey range. A veteran team that doesn't want to wait on a rookie might do it.

Somewhat hot take... Cassius Winston is a high floor player with higher upside than most think. I think worst case if he's healthy he's a Jalen Brunson really good backup pg. Has a couple really good things going for him... shoots the **** out of the ball and is a good pick and roll player. Think he could be better when teams can't play zone and in a more spread floor.

He can shoot for sure. One of the best college shooters in the class. I'm just not sure what he does when a defense switches on him in the NBA. I'm not sure he can break anyone down off the dribble. His frame worries me too, he's not gonna be very good defensively.
If we got him in the second round then it's cool. I wouldn't even entertain the idea of taking him in the first. There's a lot of PG's I like more though. Devon Dotson, Tre Jones, Malachi Flynn... I'd much rather have Malachi Flynn if we're looking for a PG who can run PNR and shoot tbh.
Xavier Tillman is someone who hasn't really been talked about here but assuming he stays in the draft then he's someone we should talk about in regards to the Jazz. He'd probably be the most unsexy pick imaginable but the guy can play basketball. He's probably the best screener in the class. Maybe the best passing big in the class. REALLY good defender. He had a Gobert-like impact on winning for Michigan State.
I would argue that Oni providing 80% of Royces defense wouldn't be enough for a team that is trying to contend. Royce also shoots a high percentage from three so despite low volume he is someone that defense has to stay on. Not sure Oni would be.
I don't know why we would be desperate to move up for Poku/Bey anyway. I LOVE Poku. Its unlikely, but if he falls to the Jazz they should take him imo. But he's a project that doesn't fit the timeline of the core. It makes no sense to surrender a key piece to go get him when we're trying to win it all. Bey could very well be there when we pick. It wouldn't shock me at all. Not sure why we would trade a key piece to move up for him. I don't really view him as a ceiling raiser.
Jalen Smith is being seriously undervalued in this class imo. Primarily just because of the skinny legs too lol. I've seen the idea posed that he can't guard centers because they'll abuse him... he defended more physical centers in the Big Ten than he'll find in the NBA LMAO. Garza, Teske, Wesson, Tillman, Oturu, etc didn't destroy him. How many NBA centers these days actually post up often? Like Jokic and Embiid are the only two. They'll probably score on Smith... they score on pretty much everyone. Who else though? I don't think Smith is going to be destroyed by the likes of Brook Lopez, some 6'5 guy on Houston, Montrezl Harrell, etc.
It's silliness. Guy can shoot threes, protect the rim, rebound, he's even flashed enticing ability to attack closeouts off the bounce and is a decent cutter. He has a skill set that isn't easy to find.
