Ace the literal definition of modern day tweener. Lacks the size/strength to play the 4 and lacks the lateral quickness/shooting to play the 2. Got horrible intangibles too. Wouldn't be surprised to see him doing a Whitmore style free fall on draft night.

this simply isn't true - but let's clarify that 2/3 are interchangeable and he's a wing. he needs to improve his shooting, but he's only 18 and shot 35% from three while taking extremely tough threes - the base as shooter is there to play that wing spot. as far as lateral quickness, your comment is simply laughable. he has issues, but shooting (of course needs to continue to get better) and lol - lateral quickness - lol, are not among them.

his size + lateral quickness might be his greatest strength. his ability to stay in front of guards and smaller forwards at 6'9" might be the one thing he has at a near elite level.

I don't have secret intel. I think the Jazz want Tre Johnson or would take VJ Edgecombe, but there's a possibility that neither will get to #5. Ace's pre-draft process hasn't been going well, and while he's a big-time talent he might pose certain risks that the Jazz are not willing to take.

If the Jazz want to run an offensive system where the ball really moves, where everyone can shoot and where multiple guys can initiate, Kon fits that model very well, as does Tre. In that context, you look at Kon as a jumbo-sized initiator, a ball-mover who makes reads at NBA speed and makes the right play both on and off the ball. Then obviously he's a high-level shooter.

So it's a question of playstyle. The Jazz might not want a ball-dominant point guard like Fears. It's difficult to be efficient that way, unless Fears becomes a big-time shotmaker. The Jazz might also shy away from a high-volume shooting wing like Ace, especially if they're not sure that Ace is going to be a team player.

So I can roughly see the rationale. That is, I could see why the Jazz would pick Kon ahead of Fears and Ace. I still think they want Tre though.
