Free agents going into the 2019-2020 season

This is the better discussion to be having, IMO, since DL isn't making any trades to jeopardize maximum roster flexibility for the 2019-2020 season.

Two max-salary spots to fit-in with our Big2 of Mitchell-Gobert?

Who is DL going after?

NAME #1 is obvi Klay Thompson

The only guys we have commitments with in 2019/2020 are Gobert, Ingles, Mitchell, Bradley, O'Neale (unguarateed), and our draft picks. Maybe Exum? Maybe Hood? I expect DL to maintain maximum roster flexibility for that off-season. Expiring contracts (notably: Favors, this year; Rubio, next year) have value to us.

I'd aim lower than Klay, but I guess if he qualifies for mega max he may walk.

Tobias Harris, Harrison Barnes, Khris Middleton, Malcolm Brogdon, Jokic (if Denver doesn't make him a FA this year), Jimmy Butler, Justice Winslow, Kelly Oubre, Stanley Johnson (I still believe Johnie Bryant could fix him).

There are a bunch of others I think that will be extended before hitting free agency.

I hadn't heard DL wasn't making any roster moves to jeopardize cap space for 2019. So Exum, Hood and Favors are all definitely gone? Because re-signing any of those guys (plus the guaranteed contrscts) pretty much kills a max salary slot.

Sign trade-able contracts.

We should be able to get to 1 max slot, even if we have to trade Hood, Exum, and/or Ingles.

Thanks, though.

I’d like to see us turn Frank Kaminsky into a worse-rebounding version of Troy Murphy (but a rebounding version would be nice).

Seriously, though, imagine Indiana Troy Murphy next to Gobert.

I was a Frank the Tank fan, but if I'm going to imagine something I'd rather imagine something fun. Just stretch fours are good, but you may as well have Jerebko out there. I'd love to have a playmaking stretch 4 or just a big wing like Covington.

He has not said that. This is just what the op wants or is guessing will happen. Jazz do value cap flexibility though.

Great thread. I think this is far more worth focusing on than 2018 free agency for any number of reasons.

Kristaps Porzingis. Knicks would match, obviously. If he doesn't want to be there, it changes the complexion of things. But no reason not to be in position to throw the offer sheet just because that's what should be done. Any and everything that can be done to get him next to Gobert and Mitchell should be done.

I think you gotta have some assets and pieces moving forward, so going for two max slots seems quite unnecessary, especially considering the Jazz's history with free agency. But having those pieces going into free agency is going to be important to pitching to whoever that double as pieces to use in a S+T scenario.

Kitchen sink - Favors/Gobert for Porzingis. If you fail, whatever.

That being said, of Hood, Favors, Exum, its clear as day to me Exum is nowhere near worthy of the gamble in contrast to the others UNLESS he comes very cheap. Even still, he hasn't really shown himself to be a real, consistent player.

Kemba Walker
Khris Middleton
Jimmy Butler (I think his dad works for BYU which is the only reason I listed him)
Tobias Harris
Kevin Love

That would be my top 5 within realism. I really don't think Klay is the kind of guy who would leave Golden State. I dont get the sense he wants to be a #1 option or leave his California lifestyle. Got to target the borderline All-Star types and convince them they can take the next step in Utah.

There isnt fixing to Stanley Johnson, he isn't broken. He is who he is, a good defender who can't score.

Quin would fix his bad scoring... maybe. I think he'd be better as a small ball 4 but he may just not be good on that end.

He plays with a small ball 4 who is much better than him, so that's basically the same as playing small ball 4.

For instance, I doubt if a team Pistons play against has a true PF, they are probably guarding Stanley instead of Harris.

Kelly Oubre is someone realistic you could go for in 2019. He'll be just turning 22 soon and has a lot of things you want in a modern wing. 3 point shooting, elite length (7'2" wingspan).
Washington is in trouble cap wise, so may find it difficult to keep him.

Are any of the realistic options guaranteed better than Hood and even Exum and on a relatively close age timeline as Gobert and Mitchell?

Oubre is the only realistic one, but that's a ton to gamble when so many have 2019 space.

There are no guarantees in life.

Why? Oubre is a role player. He isnt putting the jazz over the top and you usually have to overpay for RFA. And Oubre is like on the bottom of the list of NBA players who I think would want to live in Utah.

*Though looking at Oubre's stats, he is doing a lot better than I realized*

Still, think that is a fool's errand and the Jazz would be better off looking for an UFA veteran who is more of a proven commodity as a 3rd/2nd option.

I’m already ready to assume that anyone who Utah signs in the future will not be the number scoring option on the team.
