What's new

Free Alec Burks

So I've heard. Unfortunately, I've seen nothing from his play that would back that up. Maybe on the playground, but certainly not at an NBA level. He's totally washed up.

Foye, on the other hand, actually still plays at an NBA level and has played a lot of point guard during his career.

So the question then becomes, would you rather have a washed up player who used to be an average staying point guard several years ago? Or would you rather have a still pretty good player who can fill in at pg but was never a great pg?

I'll take the one who can at least still play at an NBA level.

Either way, the question shouldn't be between playing Burks or Foye. Tinsley is the one who shouldn't even be in the league, let alone actually getting 20 minutes on the court.

I have to disagree with Salty's assessment of Tinsley. He is a better PG than Foye, because Foye is not a PG, or at least he doesn't play the position very well, and certainly not as well as Tinsley. Yes, Tinsley has lost a step or two, but he actually is quicker and in better shape than last year, and does know how to run the point.

Foye has also played pg during his career. And he wasn't out of the league for a few years when the Jazz came calling.

Play either Foye or Burks at backup pg, play the other at backup sg.

Problem solved.

I only saw the two Clipper's games. However, that tandem seemed to struggle to get the ball past teh half court on several possessions. I don't think it's ready for real NBA games.

It won't hurt the team if Corbin keeps the reigns on him. If the kid is playing well, keep him on the floor. If he's making a lot of bad decisions, then pull him and let him know what he's doing wrong.
Case closed, sounds pretty simple.

That's a gret way to destroy a player's confidence, and make them feel like they can't make any mistakes or they will be yanked immediately.

So would you suggest that a coach should just let guys play no matter how bad they suck?
I think rewarding guys that play well with more minutes is a good idea and that playing guys who suck less minutes is also a good idea.

Also from what i have seen of burks is that he has no problem with confidence.... I think that if you pulled him out of a game when he was playing poorly his confidence would be ok.
Coaches need to know thier players and treat them accordingly, maybe haywards confidence is fragile so wouldn't want to yank him around to much, but i think it would take alot to destroy burks confidence.

Well I didn't watch many Clippers games last season, so I have no idea what Foye did as a pg there.

I do know that Foye has been in the NBA for several years though, and played lots of minutes at pg just about every year. It's not like this is an unheard of phenomenon.

Did you see Tinsley last night (or in the preseason)? He's pretty bad, on offense and defense. Dallas didn't guard him at all, and when on defense he made Booboy (or whatever his name is) look like a superstar.

Foye can't possibly be any worse at pg. Burks can't possibly be any worse at pg either if the Jazz choose to go that route.

Either way, Tinsley should be benched and Burks should get those minutes. Who brings the ball up the court during that time is not really important to me. If there is a problem with whoever does it, then make adjustments at that time. But Tinsley is washed up.

Depends on why they suck, not whether they suck. If they are taking the shots yo uexpect, but the shots have not been falling this night, yo uleave them in. If the player they are defending is taking difficult shots, but the difficult shos are falling, you leave them in. Etc. On the other hand, if they are not playing the game right, you give them a chance to correct it before you pull them.

Shooting hot and cold comes and goes at random. YOu play the people who produce long-term, not who hapens to be hot at a given moment.

Also from what i have seen of burks ...

Unless it includes some level of insider knowledge, what you have seen isn't enough to decide what Burk's confidence level is like.

Actually as far as the confidence thing goes.... I saw enough of him from college, and last season, summer league and pre-season to know he has tons of swagger/confidence.... Its ok if you cant see it cause everyone sees things differently, but i can see with my own eyes that he is very confident

Foye is a decent player, but he's not the future. Alec has the potenial to be great. We need to think big picture if we are going to
try, and win a title. We've got to find time for Burks on the floor. If Foye coming here means no Burks then it was a bad move.

Oh and you should have done the shots per minute thing for everyone on the jazz, not just the guys you want to use in your example.
I would be willing to bet that Kanter takes more shots per minute.
Since this type of question has been asked before, I just happen to have the shots/min for all the Jazz players from last season already calculated (expressed as shots/100 min):

Jefferson 50.5
Millsap 41.0
CJ Miles 40.6
Burks 38.0
Howard 36.4
Favors 32.2
Harris 31.1
Carroll 29.5
Hayward 29.0
Tinsley 28.6
Kanter 27.1
Braille 21.7
Evans 17.5
Watson 15.5

Note that Burks lands squarely between two known chuckers on this list, although his shooting percentage was slightly better at 42% - the chucker twins were both under 40%. However, for a guy who mainly shoots at the rim, his percentage was terrible, and resulted from poor decisions about when to drive. He also has a weakness with his jumper, he shoots well when receiving a pass with his feet set, but poorly off the dribble, and although he shot a reasonable percentage from three-point land - better than Miles! - he just isn't a true three-point threat. His assist/min rate is also poor, again he ranks right with Chucker J Miles and Howard the Chuck.

On the credit side, Burks got to the line more often (on a FTA/min basis) than any other Jazzman, even more than Favors, who was routinely hacked. However, his 71% FT% meant he didn't get the return needed to make the opposition truly pay.

One of the best ways to see something that is not there is to use the evidence of your own eyes.
