What's new

Free Alec Burks

On the bright side with a non-lockout year we will have time to practice this year. Burks has the chance to beat out Foye then.

Since this type of question has been asked before, I just happen to have the shots/min for all the Jazz players from last season already calculated (expressed as shots/100 min):

Jefferson 50.5
Millsap 41.0
CJ Miles 40.6
Burks 38.0
Howard 36.4
Favors 32.2
Harris 31.1
Carroll 29.5
Hayward 29.0
Tinsley 28.6
Kanter 27.1
Braille 21.7
Evans 17.5
Watson 15.5

Note that Burks lands squarely between two known chuckers on this list, although his shooting percentage was slightly better at 42% - the chucker twins were both under 40%. However, for a guy who mainly shoots at the rim, his percentage was terrible, and resulted from poor decisions about when to drive. He also has a weakness with his jumper, he shoots well when receiving a pass with his feet set, but poorly off the dribble, and although he shot a reasonable percentage from three-point land - better than Miles! - he just isn't a true three-point threat. His assist/min rate is also poor, again he ranks right with Chucker J Miles and Howard the Chuck.

On the credit side, Burks got to the line more often (on a FTA/min basis) than any other Jazzman, even more than Favors, who was routinely hacked. However, his 71% FT% meant he didn't get the return needed to make the opposition truly pay.

So you've got your 2 main scorers and then the 3 known chuckers. Exactly what I figured it would be like. I would however rather have Burks as our resident chucker than CJ or Howard. If he can get more consistent on his outside shot, keep getting to the line then by all means chuck away.

One of the best ways to see something that is not there is to use the evidence of your own eyes.

Very typical and expected post.

He is a rookie.
Also i see foye as quite a chucker too. 8 of 27 from 3 point land in the pre-season with marvin taking the 2nd most 3's (18)

You sons of bitches! Who got the Burks love eh?

I would rather see Burks taking shots at the rim, as opposed to having Foye chuck up stupid shots for 2 quarters..... thank God for Marvin cleaning up his crap.

Burks is really good at getting to the rim and likes doing that. But I wonder if this stat is one thing that contributes to him not being in the rotation yet:

Free Throws this preseason: 13-24. (54%)
Free Throws this season: 0-2

I know he was a good FT shooter last year and I'm sure he'll work it out but those numbers are not good this year. If you are the kind of guy who likes to go to the rim and get contact you should make your free throws or else you may effectively be costing your team a possession.

He's carrer 71% from the line, so nothing special.
