The 1.4 million Which were promptly hammered with legal fees by the Republican state legislature to be given voting rights? Not a dependable vote anymore now that amendment 4 was essentially nullified by state bill 7066. Since this disproportionately effects African Americans, it’s easy to compare this to the poll taxes created shortly after the civil war.

However, by mid-2019 Republican Governor DeSantis signed a bill into law which originated in the Florida Senate, SB 7066, which required that "people with felony records pay 'all fines and fees' associated with their sentence prior to the restoration of their voting rights". According to one commentator, this legislation "subverts" Amendment 4.

Trump also has a good ground game in Florida and the Hispanic Cuban vote there tends to vote republican as they dislike democratic efforts to build Bridges with the Cuban regime.

The bill's signing has already caught the attention of 2020 Democratic candidates. Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts on Friday slammed the legislation, calling it "Jim Crow-era nonsense." "My democracy plan would re-enfranchise those who have served their time and left prison," Warren said in a tweet.

When the House passed its initial version of the bill, 2020 Democratic candidate and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders called it "racist and unconstitutional." The same day, another presidential hopeful, New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker said it amounted to a Jim Crow-era law that forced black people to pay additional fees at voting booths.

The bill does allow other pathways for felons to have financial obligations forgiven beyond simply paying them. Among the options would be to have a victim forgive the repayment of restitution or to have a judge convert financial obligations to community service.

Of course, me bringing up that republicans sponsored, passed, and signed this bill in Florida to punish felons with legal fees before they can have their right to vote back probably makes me a hateful bigot.

Those are folks that have just recently got of jail. They're less likely to vote anyway.

There are still hundreds of thousands of Floridians that committed felonies in the 80s and 90s that have been disenfranchised for no good reason and are now eligible to vote.

Considering how close national and local elections have been in Florida this is significant.

Whether it is a free wall (fraud), and jailed opponent (fraud), keeping coal mines open (lie), or social welfare handouts, that is generally how it works.

Trump's going to be out of office, so I'm hoping the Republicans come up with a better alternative in the mean time. Fiscal conservative who isn't a racist snake oil salesman, for example.

No. It requires all felons to pay the costs associated with their sentences, not just recently released ones. Now I’d hope that someone who committed a felony in the 80s or 90s could pay these fees off. But it’s yet another hurdle put in place by a political party who doesn’t want African Americans to vote. Why is that?

Everything I’ve read is that Florida has been trending towards trump. It has a Republican Governor and state legislature. Both senators are republican. So it’s infrastructure is set up for a Republican President. The demographics don’t work either. The Cuban vote tends to swing conservative to as they don’t support Democratic efforts to build bridges with Cuba. Its twice as likely as the non-Cuban Hispanic vote to vote trump according to 2016’s exit poll.

While it’s still considered a swing state, and I appreciate your enthusiasm, I wonder if it’s more of a money hole for democrats at this point. I’d probably invest more in the upper Midwest, Arizona, maybe even Texas than Florida. The retired baby boomers moving to Florida and Cuban Hispanics make Florida a really difficult state for democrats to win.

But I’m beginning to wonder if the party has lost control of the steering wheel? I’m beginning to think that republicans won’t empower sane people until Hannity retires? Seems like Fox News wields a disproportionate amount of influence so that even if party leaders want a fiscal conservative, Hannity will have the ultimate say. If he wants Roy Moore to be the Republican candidate in 2024, I think he might be able to brainwash Republican viewers into voting that way, no matter what party leaders think.

Why do you think democrats can win Florida? Just curious. I’m asking you to dissuade me from my pessimistic view of the state. Clinton won 200k more Floridian votes than Obama did but got her *** kicked by trump in the state because Floridians got off on trump’s rhetoric.

Unlike the blue wall, where Clinton underperformed bigly.
