What's new

Heading to Philadelphia. Need suggestions.

Honestly, the last few times I've traveled somewhere new, I've asked a local what part of town I should stay out of and that's where I'll go. I'll then find a bar or good restaurant in that area and have a good time with the locals.

Ask everybody to show you where Boy Meets World was filmed.

(it wasn't actually filmed there, just set there, but playing the annoying pest tourist role is one of the best parts of traveling)

Real-life trolling.

It makes sense that you'd have a good time with fellow Mexicans.

Philly is a fun place to visit. Geno's is better than Pat's, but there are a lot of places better than either of those two. King of Prussia is nice, but it isn't any different than downtown Salt Lake. Big Mall, good chain restaurants, not much else. A lot of money there. There is a bar in Springfield (about 30 mins west of Philly) that has the most amazing roast beef sandwiches. That is what I miss the most about Philly.

Be careful where you head. Whatever you do, don't go into North Philly. You will probably die. Dead serious. If a cop sees you in North Philly, they will pull you over, search you for drugs, and when they find none, lecture you about how stupid you are for being in North Philly, escort you out and tell you to never come back.

If you are into more farmer's market type stuff, Lancaster is 90 mins away. Great pretzels and beef jerkey.

Sansom St/8th have great jewelry at great prices. Negotiate like crazy there. You can get a killer deal.

Walnut St downtown has great shopping. Franklin Mills Value Mall is the poor people's mall. Philadelphia Outlets have some good shops.

Rittenhouse square is nice. They have a farmers market on Sat.

Eastern State Penn is creepy in a good way.

Mutter is awesome.

Fairmount park is overrated, unless homeless dwellings is your thing.

Boathouse Row is fun at night, but you can't spend a whole evening there. It's more a mood setter.

And, if you get bored out of your mind for whatever reason, DC and NYC are only 2 hrs away. If you drive to NYC, park at Staten Island ($5 all day) and take the ferry (free) into Manhattan. If you go to DC, we would always part outside of DC (near Balt, I think) and take the Metro into DC. Much cheaper/quicker than trying to drive in and pay for parking.

^^^^^^^ One of Green's best posts besides his occasional defenses of free markets. But I think I'm like Vinny. If you tell me North Philly is a death trap, guess where I'm going? I haven't been to a hood yet where I felt like it should be off limits. Maybe if you were with children or something.

Sao paulo, brazil has a scary *** ghetto.
I had to pull over in a particularly rough part of the ghetto to puke (one of worst hangovers ever) and in the bathroom (if you could call it that) they just had a bunch of ripped up cardboard that they used as toilet paper (poor ********) and thier houses were just tin sheds with dirt floors and the was graffitti everywhere.

Lots of shady lookin people that I wouldn't want to meet in thier hood at night, but then again maybe I just thoughy is was scary due to the poverty

Could be that it was a perfectly safe place but I have just been conditioned to think that poor = dangerous.

One of my more recent finds here in town has been a bar called The Cork. It's in an area where most Angelenos, even native ones, would tell you to steer away. It's a black bar located on Adams and Crenshaw. I happened to be in the area dropping off some cushions to my furniture maker. Anyway, I was driving back home one day and was a little hungry so I decided to stop. It was probably one of the more welcoming bars in Los Angeles. So much so Ive been back a handful more times.

Don't live at the top of the bell curve of life.

North Philly is legit dangerous. I went to school there. We had to be escorted from the school to our cars after dark. Twice, I came out of class in the afternoon, and there was literally chalk on the ground where someone had been shot. My car was broken into once, and stolen another time. If you do venture, realize that you are literally taking your life in your own hands. Literally.

The largest police force in Pennsylvania is Philly's. The second largest is Temple University's. North Philly is very poor and very dangerous. 70% of the 200,000+ live below the poverty line. Drugs are rampant. Don't say I didn't warn you. :)
