What's new

Hendricks and Filipowski

Ummmm not similar at all other then both can shoot from outside lol. I also don’t see why we need to choose one or the other? Flip can play the 4&5, Hendricks can play the 3&4 positions they can coexist no problem.
Jazz need to keep all the good players they can afford
You can never have enough
Just rotate and rest them on back to back games
There will be injuries etc
Use them situationally against certain teams and players etc

Nobody really knows how good Hendricks may be
He may surpass all expectations once given the chance
He may be the all star caliber player Jazz need

And I think they compliment each other perfectly. Hendricks being an athletic defender both on the perimeter and in the paint and Flip being a playmaker

First we need a shaking my head emoji.

Second this thought process is flawed. You are make way to many assumptions. Collins is probably not part of the future. If he opts in his contract will be traded. If he opts out I am guessing he is gone. I don't see the jazz paying him 30 m per year.

Next you assume the Jazz get flagg. They only have a 14% chance of getting him. There is a much higher chance of the Jazz getting 2 through 6. You are much better off making the assumption that the Jazz are NoT getting flagg.

Hendricks is also an after thought because we haven't seen him all year. I want to see what he has when he comes back. Why even worry until you see what he brings and how Flip and Hendricks are like together.

That's because you are looking at the centers playing today. But almost all young centers entering the NBA are either solid or developing shooters and it will continue. In 5 years 80% of the starting centers will be able to shoot open trees and guys like Kessler will be at a distinct disadvantage. The non-shooting centers will be pushed to the bench or would have to be amazing in everything else to start.

There have been many non shooting centers drafted in recent years and more that will be drafted in the next few years. There is a reason why many teams are interested in Joan Beringer for example. There are also ways to incorporate non shooting bigs in to elite offenses without them needing to shoot.

Non shooting bigs are usually referred to as rim running bigs, correct?

Maybe a good example of a non shooting big was Olajuwon
Houston had 4 great shooters on floor with him
Won two championships
No one man could guard him so he always had an open shooter to pass it to
Maybe not a good example as I may find out shortly    :) :) :)

I am not sure that they are not similar at all. Their ideal position is at the 4. Defensively Flip is quite bad at the 5, while Hendricks is a poor choice at the 3 since he cannot really dribble well and he is bulked up quite a bit since his freshman season. He probably can play the small-center center too by now against certain match-ups. They have a different playing style but both of them are certainly bigs.

Are you sure about "many"? Lets look at the last two drafts to see what kind of currently or potentially starting centers were drafted and who did they replace.

2023
Wemby - shooting C, replaced Poeltl (non-shooting)
Lively - non-shooting C, replaced Powell (non-shooting)

2024
Sarr - shooting C, replaced Gafford (non-shooting)
Clingan - shooting C, replacing Ayton (non-shooting)
Edey - shooting C, replaced Adams and Biyombo (non-shooting)
Ware - shooting C, replaced Adebayo (non-shooting C who became shooting and was promptly moved to PF)
Missi - non-shooting C, replaced Valanciunas (kinda-sorta shooting at the time)

In total: 6 new shooting centers replaced 6 non-shooting, 2 new non-shooting centers replaced 1 shooting and 1 non-shooting. The trend is pretty clear.

Here is the count of teams with starting non-shooting centers.

Non-shooting centers - 12
Nets - Claxton
Raptors - Poeltl
Clippers - Zubac
Cleveland - Allen
Pistons - Duren
Hawks - Capela
Hornets - Williams
Wolves - Gobert
Jazz- Kessler
Mavs - Lively
Rockets - Sengun
Pelicans - Missi

Shooting centers - 15
No established centers - 3 (Lakers, Suns, Warriors)

So, even right now teams with non-shooting centers are in the minority. Two of the non-shooting centers, Capela and Gobert, are getting up in years, and Claxton will probably be replaced as a starter soon if there is an opportunity. Essentially, soon non-shooting centers will be competing for the starting positions for only ~ 10 teams: most of them will be probably employed only as a match-up type of defensive big off the bench.
