Historically Great Offense

Jazz defense is definitely broken during the playoffs.
Well we did kick but in round 1 and the first two games of round two. Bigger problem is the opponent going small. If our path was different we might be nba champs right now. The bucks dont scare me in the playoffs. Neither do the suns. If we can leave rudy in the paint then I feel good about our chances against anyone.

We are currently on pace to have the largest difference between top offensive rating and league average offensive rating in the history of the league (per Locke). We just eviscerated the 3rd, 4th, and 5th best defensive teams in the league. Drop big, switch everything, zone, it doesn't seem like there is a defensive strategy that we struggle with any more.

Personally, and I'm not sure why, but I love great team defense. I enjoy watching great help and recovery, rotations, moving your feet, boxing out, etc. Because of this I haven't always been able to appreciate how skilled and connected this team is capable of playing on offense.

I'm starting this thread to take a moment and appreciate what we are witnessing.
Thanks for this thread. Jazz fans are spoiled and have been for the vast majority that this franchise has existed. You would never know how good the jazz have been if you just read jazzfanz threads/post though. Thanks for a nice positive one.

you're crazy about the Suns, bru. If the way they generate their offense doesn't scare a jazz fan, then that jazz fan isn't paying attention, imo.

I'm definitely enthralled when the shots are falling. But you'll have to sue me, I guess, because I enjoy watching a gritty defense more than anything else. That's always been the case, so..

I didn't really express it but when there was a discussion about the NBA full game highlight videos you can find on youtube (and I suppose on NBA.com) and I made a comment that you don't see the defense. I get that would mean you'd almost have to show the entire game, which is a good reason for a fan to watch entire games, but my main concern is a bit different than that.

Gobert can't win MVP even though he is *probably* the most important player on one of the best teams in the NBA (I don't want to argue about that point, it was true last year also and the Jazz had the best record). Why can't the 3 time DPOY win MVP? Why is he not even top 3 in MVP discussion?

I'll tell you why. It's because so many people consume the majority of their non-favorite team NBA content via full game highlight videos which are actually just scoring summary videos. They could show good defensive stands, they really ought to show 24 second violations, but none of them will ever show enough to make it clear that a game was won on defense because they will just show the times the winning team scored and the only assumption that can be drawn from that is that the winning team was just better at scoring that game.

Let me clarify. They are really really good so they scare me. But they would allow rudy to play in the paint. So we could at least see what the jazz can do against them with our normal gameplan. Maybe we win and maybe we lose. Same goes for the bucks.

What scares me most is a team forcing rudy out of the paint. I dont want to see teams that can and will do that. I dont think the suns (because of ayton) or bucks (because of giannis) are teams that will force us to change everything we do.

I get that. But the top-line summary of why the Suns are a problem for us needs to be about their offense versus our defense: even with Rudy in the paint, they are perfectly build to expose our biggest weaknesses. That’s my point: they can go toe to toe with our best punch and hit us back harder.

While they won’t take him “out of the paint,” per se, CP will take him out of position where he can’t grab the rebound and can’t protect the lob. The only answer is if Rudy Gay can rotate to box out the lob and grab the rebound (though CP seems to hit over Rudy just fine). Even if this scenario were effective, it would require us to deploy it in the clutch (i.e. Gay closes). I don’t have much confidence in Quin watching this and responding. This far in these situations the approach has been “when all else fails, all else harder.”

Our offense punches pretty dang hard too. Kinda historically hard. I think we are top 3 in offense and top 3 in defense. When we are allowed to play our game we are awesome.

To put it another way, super great teams like the suns and bucks, who have guys who cant shoot threes that rudy can guard, can definitely beat us. But I look forward to the matchup and seeing who the better team is. A team like the warriors, or the clippers last year, is a series that I dont look forward to cause I dont have fun watching the jazz have no idea what to do on the court.
