How bad/good is Cody Williams?

I think last night's draft helped simplify Cody's development priorities. When you draft a wing in the top 10 you usually want him to become a shot creator that you can run some offense through but I think now the sole focus is 3 and D. He was beyond awful offensively last year but he doesn't have a broken 3pt stroke and he was decent defensively. If he is able to focus solely on those 2 things then I think he can carve out a long term role with us.
Great comment.

Cody and Ace might actually fit together in this type of scenario as well. Ace as your hub and Cody as long(ish) 3&D supporting player. Same thing for Hendricks.

Good point about Hendricks as well. If Ace hits then it simplifies his role to more of an Obi toppin type with more defensive potential. That is a player that I like quite a bit. A bit of a disappointment with a top 10 pick like Cody but can fill an important long term role for us.

I dont know how to do this without pissing on people's cereals here, but a good 3&D guy must be first and foremost active.

In addition to shooting well and holding up 1on1 a good 3&D guy actively repositions off the ball on offense, plays smart proactive help defense, gets rebounds.

Being a stationary 3P turret who can play decent 1on1 defense isnt the 3&D guy you want.

I think activity is about personality more than it is about mindset, so I think that Cody will never have the motor you want from a starter level 3&D.

Do we see Summer League or 36 points in a GLeague game Cody or do we see the low energy mess that we saw later. If Cody has half a brain cell he will realize that the latter is unacceptable.

Cody just plays with a slow rhythm. It hasn't been effective so far but I don't think he can go any faster, Its just kinda who he is.

Slow rhythm is not the root problem here. Joe Ingles played slow and was damn effective. Kawhi and Jokic are slow and deliberate and they one of the best basketball players alive.

Cody's problem is his general lack of skills. When you are not good at dribbling, shooting and finishing at the rim you can play lightning-fast and still be equally bad.

Unless we sit all our vets or trade them, I can't even see Cody getting any minutes at all.

Lauri and Ace will probably start. They each get 30 minutes. John Collins probably gets 22ish minutes. Walker gets 30. Flip and Hendricks will get minutes.

So do Brice and Cody trade DNP's every other game for the last of the minutes? Does Cody just spend the whole season in the g-league?

Cody was getting DNP's without Ace, so now what?

There will be plenty of injuries throughout the year that clear minutes and give him an opportunity. Of all the players to see in summer league he is probably outside of Ace the one I'm most interested in watching to see if he can give us a glimmer of hope offensively.
