How good or bad is Enes Kanter. Really.

I watched a show a couple nights ago with Shaq, Reggie Miller, Charles Barkley, Chris Weber, etc and they all said in response to a question that they didn't get much of a chance to play when they were rookies. These guys are stars and they needed time as a rookie to develop. So will Kanter. To make matters worse the Jazz are loaded with bigs so time on the court will be limited.

That being said, I watched every game he played with Turkey. Kanter is not a bust. I guarantee you one thing, Kanter can rebound. I always look for one skill that a player has to see if they can play in the NBA and Kanter's skill is rebounding. He is terrific. Even more encouraging is that Kanter looked like a chicken with is head cut off the first couple of games, as he was constantly running to set screens. He never let a play develop and you could just see the game was too fast for him. However, he improved so quickly that by the end he was clearly one of the best players Turkey had, if not the best. Give the kid a chance he will make you happy.

thanks for the insight. It's good to hear opinions of people that have watched actual games of Kanter, and hear good reviews of Kanter.

Thanks

The reason I have high hope for Kanter is because Callipari recruited him and speaks extremely high of him. Love him or hate him Callipari has one of the best eyes for talent.

Kanter would have probably dominated college ball like Sullinger did. He has an advanced physique to most college students. Of course Cal wanted him. After that it was his job to pimp him to the NBA. That helps UK's program by proving to recruits coach Cal will promote your voyage to the NBA.

They arent going to KY for their education? :)

Getting to practice against Jefferson, Favors, Millsap, and Okur should really be good for him. Jefferson has a ton of moves and is a good scorer. Favors is about as big and athletic as they come. Millsap is an undersized energy guy with some quickness and perimeter skills. And Okur is experienced, can hit the outside shot, and should be a great a mentor of Kanter. Plus it looks like he's going to have a big man coach as well. I agree with most of the posts here and don't really expect him to get many minutes early this year. But when he does finally get more minutes... hopefully not too much will surprise him and he'll be pretty well prepared.

I think he won't be any worse than Boom Bitches...

Having said that... I don't see him being the next Dwight Howard, Dirk, and Pau Gasol that so many people have compared him to... Or what he has compared himself to...

Personally, I think he should be shooting for Luis Scola. A tough big man down low who eats up rebounds, will occasionally surprise you with a post move, and plays with a lot of energy.

I don't see how there can be any idea. Even the lack of serious competition doesn't necessarily mean anything. Guys like Garnett or Stoudemire came right out of high school ready to play with the big boys. But they're obviously rare exceptions. So realistically, I'm not expecting much of anything. I just want to see what his game looks like against pros so I can get a feel for what type of player he could become down the road.
The reasons Garnett, Stoudamire, or whatever HS player don't work as comparisons are that Kanter played downright awful competition even for HS standards, then sat a year, and now won't have much of a training camp and is the 4th or 5th big on the team.

You're right about the rest. We don't know. He could come roaring out the gate, but I think he's going to look overmatched out there for a while because of the reasons already mentioned. The thing I build my hope around was his simply stunning growth on the Turkish national team where he went from buried on the bench and looking lost when he did play to the clear-cut best player (and more importantly, contributor) on the team.

But I'm going to be patient. That is, unless he comes roaring at the gate, at which point, my desire for Big Al to get dumped to the most willing will reach fever-pitch.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that after a season or two, I'll have an opinion of how good or bad he is.

Let the kid play before throwing a label on him.

Many were calling Hayward a bust mid way through the season. People will need to have some patience with Kanter.

I've actually thought that recently. I see some similarities in how the Hayward pick was perceived and the Kanter pick. I don't think the Kanter pick is as controversial or polarized, but still. The criticisms of both players seem to be the same, but I also believe their strengths - respective to their role/position - to be very similar as well.

Hayward had a proven resume to go on. Kanter has nothing but a handful of good garbage man performances at FIBA, and a really good All-Star game.

That's what KOC said in his interview a day or two ago. He said he expected Kanter to be Hayward in that respect, but perhaps even more so.

Also the bust predictions come out when someone is not obviously athletic. I think there is enough evidence that Kanter is appears to be physically in the league but he's such a mystery when it comes his actual BB IQ.
