How Much Could Tyler Herro Match Donovan in Utah?

I cannot believe there is actually discussion of Donovan Mitchell vs Herro. Disgraceful.

I'm sure a couple years ago, there would be a discussion of Duncan Robinson vs Bojan too.

Herro is a 3rd maybe 4th option type guy. He's never going to carry any team anywhere.
Wipe the tears from your eyes then look at the numbers...

Herro per 36 at 22 - 23/5.5/4.5 on 56% TS

Don per 36 at 22 - 25.3 /4.4/4.5 on 54% TS

I am not saying Herro is better... I'm saying he's not as bad as some think and not as far from Donovan's production... Certainly not turning my nose up at swapping them for one another while getting a haul of picks for my trouble.

Because Herro has the benefit of playing off the gravity that Butler, Bam and Lowry provide. He gets open looks and open lanes. He also comes off the bench most the time, so he plays against bench players.

Herro also didn’t get the privilege to play with the best PNR big in the game. He also plays 32 MPG if you think that is all against the bench you’re sorely mistaken.

The time to trade for Herro was when we had Gobert. I think the drop off in talent would be compensated for some in just a psychological revamp. At this point, you only take Herro to pump up his value and parlay it into something else.

No, he becomes our Shai in our version of the OKC rebuild.

How can you look at those numbers and not think it’s comparable lol.

I like Barrett for sure but he’s super inefficient right now. Also still young. I also think Herro could come a little cheaper.
barrett might have the widest chasm in the league between how good he actually is vs how much value he has - it would would take a lot to get barrett out of nyc, but he just isn't that good. he is indeed very inefficient and doesn't do much in terms of rebounding, facilitating or defending. and hasn't really improved much in three years - the only thing that as changed significantly since his rookie season is that he's taking more shots.

Player 1 - 27mpg 18.4ppg 52%EFG 35%3p 2.5apg 4rpg 1.6tpg

Herro - 33mpg 20.7ppg 52%EFG 40%3p 4apg 4.5rpg 2.6tpg

If Player 1 would have played 6 more mpg, he would have more points per game, more rebounds per game, close to the same assists per game but less turnovers per game.

Who is player 1?

Herro doesn't have the handle, the dribble moves, the in-between game, the self-creation or the playmaking to be compared to SGA or any lead ball handler. He just isn't a lead guard.

You can have a discussion about who you'd rather have between Herro and Barrett on the wing if you want to, but you can't really compare Herro to Donovan.

Jordan Clarkson

Couldn’t we take Lowry back in the deal and re-route him to somewhere like Dallas and get expiring contracts plus picks?

Both can be true. I just think if he makes a little improvement the asset of Herro is not something to dismiss. We are also getting a **** ton of picks and swaps with it. If he does look better you can move him at the draft (or agree to the deal and execute early in the offseason because of the extension). Most guys will improve from their age 22 season... he's not so good that he wrecks the tank.

Jordan Clarkson
Bingo. We got a winner. NBA 6th Man in 2021 vs NBA 6th Man in 2022. Damn near identical. Nod goes to Herro for being a better 3 point shooter. Nod goes to Clarkson for being better with the ball.

I'm not saying Clarkson is better. I'm just saying that being the #1 focal point of the offense (like Donovan is) compared to being the 6th man is quite the difference I have zero faith in building a team around Tyler freaking Herro.

What if JC had put those numbers up at 22 years of age? Also, what if JC could put up those numbers while not hogging the ball?

A player at JC's level at 22 might be awfully close to Don's level at 26.

We aren't building the team around him... he's an asset...

Guess what... we aren't building around Donovan either... cuz he is gone in a year or sooner...

Dude fudged Herro’s numbers to make them look closer too lmao.
