What's new

How much should we be talking about Donovan?

Well, he sure was hot and stayed hot a number of games during his rookie year! What happened this year? I'm clueless!

It just means that it is safe to say that Donovan himself is a victim of his own standards he set when he was hot last year.

The Suns announcers just had some damning words for Mitchell, in the Suns v Sixers game.

What did they say

Suns announcer: 'Donovan Mitchell is taking 18 shots a game for Utah, and he's shooting 40%. So what would you rather have, a guy that thinks he can shoot, or a guy that understand he cant, yet he's still shooting 58%, and he's passing the ball for 8 assists on the team and getting 9 rebounds.'

This is obviously referring to Ben Simmons, as well.

So many people are hating on Donovan and it’s so unwarranted. He needs Jazz fans to support him by time. I’m tired of the hate tbh. Dons a great kid, and he’s going through some growing pains as a young NBA star. So many are all over him. He deserves much more time.

I think you need to separate hate and criticism. Are there some on this board that hate him? Maybe. however, Jazz fans want him to succeed. And the criticisms are absolutely warranted and nobody should be immune to them. And of course he needs time.

Also, will people stop with the star prefix I don't believe he's earned that just yet.

He’s earned the star prefix. He has a signature shoe, beat OKC in the playoffs, won the dunk contest, and is very well known. He is a star.

I’m not talking about this board so much as I am social media. I feel like he’s taking some unfair venom spit his way by fans of other teams when he’s really a very good kid. It’s fine to say he needs to improve some things. Calling him an inefficient chucker, @ him, saying he’s a bust or the next Wiggins or Tyreke Evans, things like that are just too much, and he’s getting a ton of it from maybe not Jazz fans, but NBA fans. It’s olay to say he needs to make better decisions or shoot better shots. Some of the other stuff is too much. He has plenty of time to right this ship and there’s plenty of twitter folks that have plenty of dumb takes on him right now for sure.

Yeah Donovan isn't a star your right. The announcer has some valid points. Ben Simmons is a star. I think everyone knows Simmons is better than Donovan even if they don't want to say it. Honestly Donovan is an inefficient player right that's all I can say about him. But he's young so we'll see.

Shoe deals and dunk contests do not fool me.

For me personally you have to at least have a consistent level of very good to great play to be a star. This is over many seasons also. One season where he was still somewhat inefficient is not a star. I think a lot of people jumped too early.

Donovan is in a slump; no question. But it really is related to his summer of not being able to do much intense basketball duty because of the boot, and his large tour of the world. He clearly is not as quick or explosive this year, which results in a high rate of his shots being blocked, missed layups, and timing issues. He is slowly improving and no longer looks like he's out of shape out there. I even believe his shot will come back. Unfortunately, his drop in overall effectiveness is the reason the Jazz are mediocre. The Jazz, as constructed, need him to be a star and he just isn't right now.

We’ll agree to disagree. A shoe deal is a big deal and means you are a marketable star. His play has dropped a bit for the time being, I have confidence that will turn around.
