Until last month, Democrats had controlled the Stark County Treasurer’s office for more than 60 years.

But the multimillion theft by a former treasurer employee led to the ousting of Democratic Treasurer Gary Zeigler and a Republican being chosen to lead the office temporarily.

Stark County Republicans hope to make the party change permanent in November.

The party’s Executive Committee on Wednesday nominated Alexander A. Zumbar as the party’s candidate for the general election. The Alliance resident currently serves as North Canton’s finance director....
