If the Jazz don't make the playoffs, they lose their pick?

What exactly is the criteria for whether or not Minny gets the Jazz first round pick?
If Minny doesn't get it this year, then do they get it next year? What about the year after?
In other words, are the Jazz destined to give Minny their next high pick whenever it happens, or is there an expiration date on this?

Our 1st (Big Al):
T'Wolves receive the Utah's 2012 first-round pick (lotto protected in 2012 and top 12 protected in 2013, and Minn has option to swap picks in 2014 if Utah pick is 10 or lower. Otherwise Minn receives 2nd rounder.)

GS's 1st (DWill):
Jazz receive the Warriors' 2012 first-round pick, via Nets (Marcus Williams trade) (top 7 protected in 2012 and 2013, top 6 protected in 2014. If not received by 2014, Jazz will instead receive Warriors' 2014 and 2016 second round picks)

It's lottery protected this year don't know about the year after, so make the playoffs lose the pick miss playoffs keep pick.

They could have got another top 4 pick to retool for next year with.

Nah. Colton is correct. In the new CBA they've bumped the playoff structure to 11 teams per conference because they were desperate to increase revenues after such a long lockout.

Jazz might not only lose this pick but their next three. That's the price they agreed to pay for an extra $10mm per year in revenue sharing.
