What's new

If we had the number one pick in the 2014 draft, would we draft Wiggins?

they pass on Wiggins for a lesser star who fits the Culture, who adds and builds upon it, who seals it. If we do get the number one pick in 2014, my money is on Jabari.

Absoluletly nope. If you prefer Wiggins over Jabari but think he will not wish to play for the jazz, so you choose jabari does not make sense at all. The 1st rule for the drafts are choosing the best player who is avaiable on the board. In 4 years if things do not go well as you wish, trades can happen. Also, we are not Bucks, Raptors or Bobcats so with the young core who all have potential, rookies gotta prefer jazz as their destination to grow up with others.

So, the Jazz end up with the number one pick, and they have a shot at adding Wiggins to the talent they have already accrued, which includes:

Burke, Neto, Hayward, Burks, Favors, Kanter....

AND

30 million in CAP space...

and they turn him down because they are scared they can't win him over in 7 years (his rookie deal plus the restricted FA deal)? Don't be stupid.

Heck, this team is competing for titles:

PG - 8-10 million a year FA, Burke, Neto
SG - Hayward, Burks
SF - Wiggins, mid-level Battier-type player
PF - Favors, 8-10 million a year FA
C - Kanter, Gobert

And that still gives you 10 million a year to play with, and another pick in next year's draft.

You don't draft Wiggins because you are scared...don't be stupid.

So a rich Russian or Arab is going to purchase the Jazz once they gotta extend their core players? With a player like Wiggins expect the Derrick Rose provision to be a realistic scenario. Expect Kanter to get max if he improves like desired in 2 years. Right now I'd bet Hayward is $8M+ and Favors $9M+ avg. That's not cheap bro

We are already paying Hayward and Favors, bro. Their extensions are only a couple of million each. That's fine if Kanter maxes out. No biggie. Then you are now full of assets. Hell, Wiggins, and Kanter max out, then you are at 30 million. Add in 10 each for Hayward and Favors and that puts you up to 50 million. Isn't the luxury tax at 70? That is still 20 million for role players. Plus, you have Burke on a rookie deal, you will have another rookie contract in 2014 on top of Wiggins, a pick in 2015 and 2016 and two more in 2017. If you decide that you need to put more money into the pg position instead of Hayward, I'm sure Hayward could net you a pretty good haul. Probably a better haul than OKC got for Harden (if you are smart).

Point is, you add Wiggins to this team, you are competing for a title.

The other point:

Wiggins can't go anywhere for SEVEN years. That's a long time.

I don't think rookie contracts are seven years long.
Sure we could offer him more money than other teams but he could leave after his rookie contract right?
Like hayward or favors can go elswhere next year if they want to right? Maybe Im wrong.

Plus guys can become cancers if they want out and force a trade.

Still a no brainer to pick wiggins #1 if he is the best player

Players become restricted free agents after their rookie contracts expire. Teams can match whatever offer their player gets in free agency and keep them. Virtually all decent players get 3+ year contracts (the max a player with 7 years of NBA service can receive is at least 30% of the cap, which is why you see some players signing 3 year extensions after their rookie contracts), thus 7 years of team control is a near certainty (although some players demand trades).

O I C.
Then what green said is true! All the better!

Dal's weird JazzBasketball fantasy:

1) Have Toronto win the first overall pick. Hometown kid goes to Canada, Toronto becomes emerging eastern powerhouse. Canadian basketball begins to lose its image as a joke
2) Jazz draft Parker after he falls in the draft. He's Mormon. Utah is Mormon. We stay out of the spot-light-- criminally underrated, as usual.

We meet up with Toronto in 2017. Everyone is saying that Wiggins is a top 3 player in the NBA. He's gonna steam-roll the Jazz, etc etc.

Jazz win in 5 games, win their first championship. Parker goes on his 2 year mission.

During the offseason, Golden State wins the lottery for the 1st overall pick-- only to send it to us.

We draft a ROTY, go to the finals, lose. Parker comes back, and then we threepeat.

Trey Burke becomes Finals MVP.

So you're saying MJ was a hidden Mormon and didn't play baseball?

You forgot the part where Jabari goes to Canada and baptizes a Muslim kid.

This is so unrealistic it's funny. How will we pay Kanter, Favors, Burks, Burke or Hayward if we give that much money to outside sources? That cap space is possibly able to be partially used. But in no way will we give all of it to FA's.
