It Gets Better at Brigham Young University

I watched this video this morning. I have to say, I feel bad for those students and I'm glad that more and more people are educated.

I really wished the world we lived in was less ignorant and more tolerant.

Huh?

Tolerant?

BYU might be the most "tolerant" place in the whole United States. When was the last time you ever heard of anyone being beaten up, shot at, or mugged there? Race, sexual orientation, etc are treated much more intolerantly at other universities.

Does BYU have an Honor Code that COULD potentially be embarrassing to you if you screw up? Sure. But who forced you to go there? You CHOSE to live by a certain standard. IF you cannot or do not want to abide by the standards they have put forth, then leave!

it could be a lot worse. Just look at cases at Duke, North Carolina, Virginia Tech, Cal, etc.... Students are constantly being beaten up, harassed, or accused of much worse things.

BYU students might be ignorant of some things. But I'd rather receive a note about my "inappropriate dress" and how my clothes gave someone bad thoughts than be beaten up or harassed because of my skin color or sexual orientation. Which is what typically happens at every other university in this country.

Once again, BYU gets a bad rap for its religious affiliation. What the enemies of the church won't do to hurt something they refuse to accept.

BYU is a very special and unique place. Tolerance is something that BYU and Mormons in particular have a lot of. Most of Christianity is saying that kids are going to hell and that Mormons are possessed by Demons because they believe in the BOM and that homosexuality is a one-way ticket to hell... Mormons believe in children being saved and not blamed for Adam's transgression. Mormons believe in both the BOM and Bible. And Mormons teach and believe that transgressions (actual actions) are causes for repentance. NOT having temptations to commit x with x.

In regards to this video, I think it is great! Look at how many "straight" Mormons are reaching how to their fellow homosexual members and students? Where else do you see this? Fellow members reaching out to other members. Helping them to not feel like crap or commit suicide. In fact, this is what I got out of it. It was a reach out video for support and positive thinking. Don't commit suicide.

I repeat, where else do you see this?

Certainly not at TCU. They were going to provide gay housing (and hetero could live there too) for students... But public outcry was severe, so the plans were cancelled.

Perhaps TCU needs a video of, "It gets better at TCU."

Of course, we all know that Mormons are intolerant and other Christian denominations are perfectly tolerant... As are all other religions. As are all other people without religious affiliation!

Mormons stink! And have horns!

I've got a pretty good Asian sniffer. I'm going with Korean.

I'll take your word for it. I really can't tell the difference between Japanese, Korean, Northern Chinese, Southern Chinese. I was trying to google some face comparisons, but mostly it comes up with faces for models and pretty people that don't actually help my cause very much.

Just wait till these kids hit there mid-twenties and the real sexual rage kicks in. This whole "things will get better" stuff will change, big time. I feel really bad for those students.

Seriously? Mine died at 25, which coincidentally, was when I got married.

This **** seriously blows my mind. They're gay. They know they're gay and can do nothing about it. Yet, they still choose to follow an institution that believes that as long as they don't act on one of the most basic and strong human instincts they may, at very least, see their family again after they die. What a worthless, degrading, and incredibly sad existence. At least there are people at BYU that feel bad for them. Yay........

Um...

I am still a Mo and love it even though it's against my religion to swear, whack off, drink Mtn. Dew, fish on Sunday, and hate going to Church. Since everyone has a different idea of what Gordon (PBUH) will judge them on, it's really not that unbelievable that there are happy gay LDS.

And more power to them and to you, my friend. But it has to be said, where the LDS Church stands currently on LGBT lifestyles will come to head for these kids eventually. I wish them well and hope they continue to be happy, but the fact that their church will not accept them as they are fully will end up hurting them, badly. It sucks.

Hey at least they are not Black.

"If the White man who belongs to the chosen seed mixes his blood with the seed of Cain (those with dark skin), the penalty, under the law of God, is death on the spot. This will always be so." - Brigham Young

Reminds me of my high school.

I went to an all-guys Jesuit (Catholic) high school. There were guys who were out on that campus, and no one really cared. A teacher, too. They just had to keep it quiet, not form any kind of GSA, not go to dances together, etc, but only so some parent wouldn't complain and bring the bishop down on our heads. No harm, no foul.

And how do you feel about, say, Catholic priests and nuns who also choose to remain celibate? Are their lives similarly worthless, degrading, and sad?

Hey hun, you may want to check the context there. It would help you a lil.

How exactly does "the church" not accept them? Are they kicked out of BYU? Excommunicated? Are they not able to participate in activities or have callings? That's weird. I thought I saw in this video (all) of them mentioning their callings, flirting at church activities, and attending church. Have they been expelled from church and kicked out of BYU in the past few days?

I was raised Mormon, but left because I'm gay. I was 19, and faced with the choice of coming out, or going on The Mish.

I really don't understand people who want to be in homosexual relationships, yet still follow the church. Every Sunday or so growing up, I would sing a song in primary called "Follow the Prophet". This song, various other church hymns, and countless other General Conference talks taught me that the Prophet directly communicates with God-- and what he says is LITERALLY the word of GOD. To say "I disagree with the Prophet's stance on homosexuality" is to say "I do not believe in the Mormon religion." The LDS faith is special, in that it has a modern day prophet, which means the doctrine is NOT up for interpretation. In fact, it's quite clear how the church feels about homosexual relationships.

If you think your interpretation of the LDS religion is better than that of the religion's actual prophet, then you need to start your own church.

No, but they're adults who can make this decision for themselves after years of consideration and prayer.

Being gay is basically "Be celibate, or be excommunicated."
