Jackpotting Around 52 - Uproar Theory, Tankxiety, Keyonte, and Trade Talk

We back! Didn’t go as hard on Nepo Ainge ismy only regret. Recorded on Sunday but it’s really prescient after last night.

I probably won't have a chance to listen for a bit, but if the front office isn't committed to keeping the pick (I'm not saying they aren't), then we should all get on the same page and see if there is anything interesting on the trade market at the deadline.

For example if Austin refuses to aggressively sit Lauri post all star break, then we should see if there is a piece available at the deadline that we can trade for that would give us a few more months of data vs waiting until the off season.

The best solution is to just do everything we need to in order to keep the pick, but the worst solution would be to not commit either way and lose out on opportunities that might not be there in the summer.

The league can shiv the Jazz in the lottery, but they can’t prevent the Jazz from keeping their pick if the Jazz get brutal with their tanking and end up bottom-4.

If the Jazz had a viable rim defense (or a plan to get there that didn’t involve coughing up more assets) then I’d say to just scrap all plans of tanking and to just fight to make the playoffs. But we don’t. The ceiling of this season is capped pretty low.

I am absolutely committed to not coughing up the 9th or 10th pick to the Thunder which is what is most likely if we don’t get sufficiently grimy. Absolutely.

I fully endorse the proposals floated to disincentivize tanking, particularly no pick protections that fall between top-4 and lottery. The last four years have been ****ing awful, but the incentives are so incredibly stacked to keep the pick at all costs.

They're probably checking on trades to see if that route is viable....I think the worst option would be to make a move for the sake of making a move. If no good trade is out there, I think it kinda just makes it a bad choice but doubling down would be the very worst.

Sure, if they make a trade it should be focused on making our future team better.

Just going through thought exercises this also applies the other way. We shouldn't make a trade just to try and make us worse this year if we are not going to commit to sitting Lauri and doing whatever it takes to keep our pick if that trade would also hurt us in the future. For example if Svi could be a positive rotation player on our team next year and we like his contract then we shouldn't trade him just for the tanks sake unless we are fully committed to the tank.

Definitely discussed. Its time to look in the mirror and make a decision. Half heartedly tanking and missing out on transaction cycles is just not it.

For me its can you nab a Keon Ellis or Jalen Smith on the cheap. Maybe Houston moves Tari Eason before FA to avoid that dance. Stuff like that. Not like a star trade (unless a great one pops up).

The opportunity costs arent huge but they aren't nothing.

If we can get the perfect piece (one that doesn’t cost much and can check off all the basic skills criteria), and can play both big positions, then let’s do it.

Jalen Smith sounds like a candidate here.

Wrt to Key being a small guard and clutch defender....I don't think it really matters how small you are. It's just a matter of being a good defender. Lowry and FVV were both tiny but also great defenders. I am not really a believer in the predictive power of clutch performance, but kudos for actually mentioning clutch defense. Almost no one ever pays attention to it, and it's actually been our defense carrying our good clutch performance.

I can get behind the idea that Key and others are not as bad as they are now, but I think they have indeed been this bad so far. There's only one way to be 30th three years in a row.
