Jackpotting Around -Tony Jones Edition

Wait, so you’re saying because he hit on Rudy and Don, that’s why he drafted that doofus over McDaniels and Bane?
Why else draft a back up center when you have McDaniels and Bane right there, with the scouting department and Quin begging you to take them, on a team light on wing depth / size / defense?

He must have felt very strongly about Udoka.

McDaniels had a pretty bad freshman season and iirc had some character red flags that made him drop

Bane was a senior with very short arms.

The last game Bane and Udoka played Udoka had 34-15-5

Eh….the Udoka pick was just like Lyles over Booker. Burks over Kawhi. Draft is hindsight 20/20….but yeah it’s incredible how many good players were in the range.

For me, it’s more frustrating because of the poor team planning aspect. The Jazz were obsessed with getting a PG to play next to Don and getting a backup C for Rudy. Doke was just a small episode of that. Terrible, terrible team building around those two. We failed them.

Dok had a series of bad injuries. It just didn't work out. He's still playing overseas.

It does seem like Utah was set on getting a certain kind of player instead of being open to truly evaluating BPA.

Sorry!! I liked a lot of what Lindsey did but selecting Udoka over Desmond Bane had to be one of the worst misses. Udoka may have had a monster final year in college but Bane had a solid 4 years. He shot 38% from 3 his freshman year. He followed that up with 46%, 42% & 44%. He was also a good size for a guard which the Jazz needed at the time.
There is no GM in the league where you cant find those kind of decisions. You are comparing the pick from one team to the options for 30 other teams. That kind of stuff happens all of the time. Definitely bad in retrospect but lots of other teams passed on Bane without getting a player near as good.

Don't kid yourself, we never had a chance at Wemby. He went where the money...uh...league needed him to go.
Even if you subscribe to the fixed lottery conspiracy they still could've had a chance at a very good prospect such as Amen or Ausur Thompson. Finishing with the 9th pick in '23 draft was a disaster anyway you slice it. Even Ryan knew it on draft night when he was quoted saying they ended up with the #9 guy on their board.

Finishing at 14 wasn't a problem for Dallas, as long as the league needs you to win the lottery. Basically in the end it wouldn't matter.
