Game Thread Jan 01, 2026 08:30PM MT: Utah Jazz @ LA Clippers

Added to Calendar: 01-01-26

So let me get this straight....
  • Kyle Anderson was our leading scorer
  • Cody actually played a decent basketball game despite laying his usual goose eggs on REB, AST and STL (in 26 minutes may I add)
  • Clippers actually struggled to put the game away despite playing exclusively against our 2nd and 3rd string guys
I cannot make any proper analysis of this game except this: Weird stuff.

I legit can’t tell if the clippers are trying to tank or not.
They don't own their pick so they are not trying to tank. So sad for them

Kawhi with 45 points and 0 trees planted. Masterclass.
What does this mean?

Missed the game (too late), but just watched the Cody shot attempts on NBA.com. The shot where he puts his shoulder in to Kawhi for the layup shows how far his strength has come.

Nice game from him, but personally I would prefer to see a 5reb, 2ast, 2 stocks game from him than a 18pt game. He's not going to make it in the league as a scorer, he needs to be able to do the connective stuff at a high level.

His support stats are just awful (per36 or % or however you wanna look at them).

This game did not change his status in my mind, even if it was one of his best games with the varsity team.

Stocks will follow when (or if) he gets more comfortable out there. It feels like he makes the correct read but doesn’t fully commit, likely to avoid taking any risks.

I have really low expectations for his rebounding stats, but on the flip side he’s always boxing out.

I don't see that.

Their backup 5 grabbed a rebound right over him precisely because he wasn't boxing out. He just has no motor towards the ball and just kind of stands there expecting someone else to get it.

Hit the bullseye on this one. His offensive game is clearly as a slasher/scorer, and that’s who he was in college. That part of his game looks improved when he actually does it, but it’s just not a play style that fits in when you’re the worst guy on the court. He needs to be that connective, supportive player but that’s just not who he is or ever has been.

I would say Collier is similar. He can really only play well when he’s dominating the ball. He’s in a unique situation where he gets that opportunity every night, but I don’t think there’s really a place for him on a good team. Think Collier is closer to being a worthy ball dominant player than Cody is being a leading scorer, however.
