What's new

Game Thread Jan 24, 2022 07:00PM MT: Jazz at Suns

Added to Calendar: 01-24-22

Our longer more athletic players like House, Forrest, etc have a better time defending and getting into the paint rather than our stationary 3 pt shooters playing matador defense. Forrest had more drives tonight than Spida has this entire season.

I understand why Snyder has to be patient and not reactionary, but now halfway through the season, it's time to admit what's really going on. The real difference between this year and last year, is Jordan Clarkson and Joel Ingles. I love those guys. It's hard to admit. But they were great last year, and have been really bad this year. Without those two, it's made our team depth very shallow, and it's not that they are missing shots but are actively bad and hurt the team when they are playing. Multiple games this year we've been close in the fourth quarter until Jordan Clarkson checks in, has three bad possessions in a row, and doesn't play defense resulting in the other team pulling away. Even just trading them for nothing would benefit the team at this point, because even average rotation players are probably an improvement. Yes the team has other problems, the perimeter defense and funnel-to-Rudy scheme might just not be able to win a championship, but I honestly think it's Clarkson and Ingles that is the big difference this year. Their play has seriously handicapped the team, and Snyder has shown zero appetite for holding them accountable or cutting their minutes.

So far. I think he will soon. He's not going to have a choice if this play keeps up.

I wouldn't mention Ingles in the same breath as Clarkson. He's cooked, but he's not launching 20 shots in 26 minutes and totally lost on defense. Despite all the ways he's regressed, he's still a great passer and is a better defender at half the speed because he's a basketball genius and has figured out how to get the most out of his worn-out body.

But broadly speaking, yeah, the drop-off from those two is easily enough to result in the difference this year.

Trust the system. Never doubt the system. What the scrubs were doing was fine, for being off-system. But to really close this out we have to follow the system. Wait, we lost? That's ok, the system is bigger than one game. Following the system it will all level out in 3 or 4 games. The system is life.

Quin ought to tell the fellas that if you don't play hard and smart you will get an excellent seat to watch the game next to me.

I agree with this. Ingles was a huge asset to us last year and this year he's basically just been an non-entity. But Clarkson is a much bigger issue with the amount of possessions he drains from the rest of the team. Ingles could theoretically start to play and shoot better in time. But I really think this team would be better off without Clarkson. Everything he can do, we have guys who can do it better. If three Clarkson possessions a game became Conley possessions, we're a better team.
