What's new

Jaren Jackson Jr. traded to the Jazz

FWIW there are at this point 8 other teams that appear to be actively tanking like the Jazz (currently with 19 wins or less) and the Jazz play those teams a total of 11 times in the remainder. These teams will be tanking hard. Probably harder than us. Perhaps we lose our pick eh?

It's not like that. From what I've seen and read, JJJ seems like... a nice guy. A beta type who will always defer to a stronger personality. In Memphis, that was always Morant. Jackson was an overpaid Robin to his Batman.

What I mean with "baggage" is that he'll bring with him the style of play that unfortunately made him a two-time All Star. Guys are not really going to change their games later in their careers when that happens.

The trouble is that it's very difficult to integrate his black hole, back-to-the-basket, ball stopping tendencies to a modern NBA offense. Lately, the Grizzlies have been trying to play at a faster pace, moving the ball, and it was clear JJJ was just confused by it, floating out on the fringes of the offense. He didn't know where to be or what to do if he didn't get his trusty, outdated low post touches.

Hardy has his work cut out for him. Our offense has looked really good with space and movement and both Lauri and Keyonte thrive in an environment like that. JJJ, on the other hand, needs spacers around him and a static offense. We'll see who gets the "parked in the corner" assignment.
Sounds like something a racist would say. You really should take some time to reflect on your internal biases.

And, by the way, Tremendous Upside - we’re only in phase 4 of my strategy here. Things are going to get significantly worse for you. I haven’t even started the contest with prizes to incentivize everyone banning you and your alts.

On a basic level, I LOVE that we took a win-now win-next-season swing. That's absolutely what I was hoping for. The tank is dead (soon). This I do celebrate.

However, you can't separate the move from the end result as the stakes are so big. To understand my stance you have to understand that I truly hate JJJ as a player. To me he was quite literally the worst possible trade target, as far as max guys go. The writing was on the wall for Jackson in Memphis, and seeing as he was basically stealing money this season, I felt some schadenfreude. He was a lazy fake star who couldn't/wouldn't rise to the occasion when his team needed him.

I knew JJJ was probably getting traded and that someone was in for serious buyer's remorse. I also thought that the Jazz were out of the danger zone, as it wouldn't have made any sense from the FO's point of view to bring in a healthy high profile player in the middle of a hardcore race for the bottom. I was wrong.

It's basically torture to watch JJJ stop the ball and do his stupid little left-handed push shots, but here we are. I guess I'm gonna have to try to get used to it. If he was a $25 million per year player, I wouldn't complain. But he's paid like a franchise guy and that takes a **** ton of things off the table.

I don't think we needed a "star" who will bring his "star" baggage with him. We already have two of the best scorers in the League and there's a limited amount of basketballs for the starting lineup as it is. I guess I think JJJ is massively overrated as a defender, and we will end up hoping he somehow scores 20+ppg instead to get some return of investment. That will bring its own set of problems.

Other than that, I'm overjoyed!

Anyone the Jazz would be able to trade for would have some deficiencies, or be old like AD. JJJ is rough on offense at times, but gives you the size needed to compete against a Victor Wembyana owned West in the upcoming years. Don't get me wrong, a ton still has to go right, like keeping this years 1st and hitting something decent on it.

Intervene how?
I imagine it would start with a private call from the league to the owner. Even if you do not subscribe to the "league controls the draft order" theory, there are numerous ways the league office can screw a team if they are inclined, starting with next year's schedule. "You like tanking? Here how about we front load your schedule with brutal matchups, give you a couple of 8 game road trips, and make sure that you get an abundance of back to backs. That will help you tank next year! I know they can do that because they used to do it to us on the regular.

I would imagine that they could press conference something and lay down a million dollar fine and highlight the Pacers as one of the chief problems from a competitive standpoint for the league. You can say, "Yeah, I don't care, I'm still getting a great pick!" You better hit on that pick, because if you shamelessly tank, screw up the pick, and then continue to suck, you sink franchises like that. Fans will hate you.

There is a reason that, since those Philly teams, owners don't just spam the G league lineup shamelessly. It has to be carefully targeted.
