Jazz and Knicks discussing Donovan Mitchell trade per Shams Charania and Tony Jones

I think they are having a huge issue with going to 3 unprotected picks because it becomes tough to make the next deal. Danny wants 4... I think the deal gets done with either:

-RJ, Toppin, 2 unprotected picks, 3 protected picks
-RJ, Grimes, 2 unprotected picks, 2 protected picks
-Grimes, Toppin, IQ, 3 unprotected picks, 2 protected picks

Add swaps and seconds for flavor.

This sums it up pretty well. Solid post per usual.

The decision on their part boils down to their pursuit of the second star- In the future is RJ plus one pick a better trade asset or are 3 unprotected picks a better asset?

If they give us 3 unprotected picks the most the can offer in 2024 is 1 more protected pick.

I would say 3 unprotected firsts is the better trade asset for sure.

I'm firmly in camp that we keep RJ... if he blossoms a bit you can build with him or move him for a premium. If he only makes mild improvements he's paid properly to be your 3rd/4th starter.

Two years from now they will have access to picks that are further out. Those picks will be worth a lot. They will not be destitute.

Right... especially if RJ is playing 4th fiddle to Donovan, Randle, and Brunson... will be hard for him to breakout in that scenario. Here though... I think he could blossom.

They really should trade us RJ + their 23/26/28 unprotected 1sts. That would leave them with their 24/30 unprotected 1sts next year plus Toppin/Grimes/Quickley.

If they give us 3 unprotected picks then in two years they can trade their 2029 and 2031 picks. If they trade us 2 and its the 2023 and 2028 picks then after the 2023 draft they can move 24/26/30

Also, I'd bet a lot that Danny is most interested in Quickley out of the Knicks young guys and the Jazz get him. When this first started, Quickley was the guy the Knicks fans wanted to keep. He is an advanced stats darling, and, for some reason, a type of player that Ainge covets.

"Fine you keep Grimes, but we will need an extra pick and, I guess we are stuck with Quickley."

Yep. That's why Danny isn't going to settle. The Knicks aren't going to be as pick poor as they claim.

Eh the 4th best player on decent to good big market team gets more shine than the best player on a bad small market team. It's the Kuzma Theorem.

Shine is fine and good. Kuz has more trade value now than last summer. When you are 4th fiddle and the team has Lebron and wins a title you get shine. When you are 4th fiddle and you have Randle and you are a play in team.... well that ain't great.
