Jazz and Knicks discussing Donovan Mitchell trade per Shams Charania and Tony Jones

Been making that point about picks for a while. The number of picks that turn into players as good as Rudy and Don is very low and people love to point out a few picks that became lotto picks and stars but there are dozens and dozens of trades for first round picks that never amount to a great player.

I understand the thought process of this logic for sure. The problem is sans a few special circumstances you can’t win a championship without having a top-5 ish player. The only real way for us to do that is accumulate as many draft picks as possible and be terrible ourselves to give us the most chances as getting a player of that caliber.

I don’t think the numbers are that far off. Can you think of many trades where unprotected picks and swaps were given that did not net some lotto selections?

There are lots of trades for single protected firsts that definitely netted small returns… but I think we’d be surprised if we looked at trades with multiple picks and unprotected picks. There is a reason teams stopped handing them out.

Seeing some rumblings on Twitter that the Knicks offered six picks - the four protected from other teams, and their own 23 and 25 unprotected.

Jazz want all four of Knicks unprotected, plus two of the others.

You can see why things are at a standstill.

That's a **** offer. The 4 other picks are all heavily protected and the MKE pick has a chance of about 1% maybe less to convert. So it's 5 picks and 3 of them are trash picks.

Regardless our focus needs to be on getting the Knicks 23/25/27/29 1sts first and foremost. Even if they want to protect the 2029 1st top-5 like Minnesota.
Yep. 2027 and 2029 picks are the best assets NYK has. IMO we should do no trade without having at least one of them unprotected.

Knick fans think they have leverage and not give oBI, IQ, or grimes and only 2 pick and 3 protected. Need find other team. This is not acceptable.

At worst it should be 27 unprotected and 29 top-5 protected. Exactly what we got in the Gobert trade.

I would also like to get their 26 pick swap so we have more options to swap with in 2026 since we have Minnesota’s as well.

Don't listen to NYK fans. Knicks have no leverage.
There is no such thing as a team wanting to trade for a 25 year old 3 time all star who has 3 years on his deal having leverage in trade talks. Ainge has ALL the leverage anyone can ask for. The team that has the most valuable asset that others want always has the leverage.
