Jazz are Setting Up a Tank

Honestly, it sounds like Windhorst is speculating here. “Because Ainge did this the last time he was in a similar situation, this trade means it’s going to happen again!” That’s not great logic in my opinion.

Or, he‘s going to attempt to sell high on Royce and upgrade him.
Its not just Windy guessing based on precedence. This is him saying the thing without saying the thing. If you listen to him over the years he hates being aggregated... he loves being dramatic and slightly cryptic. He knows something and that is why he said this... not saying this because he is looking at weather patterns and ****. He knows ****.

Yeah because none of those teams would also have interest in KD.

KD domino had to fall first. Don is gone
It is curious that all the players in Mitchell’s inner circle are out. It almost feels personal, like we’ll show this kid clowning us on social media. But even if we did deal both guys, I don’t see us going into tank mode. Smith is determined to stay out of the tax this season but we’re not a tank team, never have been.

I dont think it's personal. I just think those players werent that good and Royce was able to net a first so it was an obvious trade.

Assuming that the Jazz are on the tank path (and I increasingly they are):

What kind of young talent should they target? Does this change compared to when the thought was that they'd rebuild around Donovan?

For example, Collins, Hunter, and OG will all be 25 this year. Is that too old now? McDaniels is younger, but he's never struck me as someone who should be the centerpiece/senior citizen of a rebuild. Should the priority be solely on draft picks without worrying about youngish talent?

I don't think its personal.. but I think it may have been a bit of a test... or a sign that we out on Donovan.

I would be extremely selective in any young talent that was targeted for long-term purposes. If we tank now, picking top 3 in the 2023 draft is the priority. Draft picks + garbage expiring contracts are our friend.

Well for whatever reason then I think we made a mistake not giving Forest a qualifying offer. He played great D, had the great college resume, was trending upwards and wasn’t going to break the bank.

Agreed, I think this could be a little bit of Danny saying, “We’ll do our job, you do yours,” to Don.

I also think the Gobert trade is coming sooner rather than later to get value for him before it drops substantially in a year or two, to put better pieces around Don to see if we construct a better “playoff” team while also showing Don he’s our guy, and indirectly, through what I expect would be tough defensive days early on, letting it be known, he has to start playing defense. Gobert could mask much of that before. When he couldn’t because of poor defensive effort from Don (and others), Rudy said ****. Don didn’t like that. If Don gets torched now though without Gobert and our team defensive stats are brutal, he may take it personally. And listen to people not named Rudy or Quin and actually begin to buy in on that end. Sometimes kids listen to one parent but not the other.

Jared Butler gonna start at PG next season and get 25 per game... we don't need Trent.
