What's new

Jazz to sign John Lucas III

Maybe it was mentioned early in the thread and I forgot or just missed it but no mention that this was done (not bringing back any of the Jazz FA's back) because they want the young kids to feel like this is their team, that they want them to take over the leadership roles moving forward, or at least see if they are capable of it and see how they respond.
Also no mention that he played for Thibs and his vaunted defense.

I was guessing like 1.5-2 million with a team option second year

Why?

It's going to be a minimum deal. It might have multiple years on it.

The incentive for him joining was his relationship with Lindsey and the fact he will probably get playing time as the backup PG.

**Edit, couldn't get the top of the graph to cut&paste exactly right but I figure y'all are smart enough to auto correct the headings in your heads yourself**

So JL3 is going into his 6th year this season (NBA season he played several overseas) so that would put his minimum at about $1,069,509

It will be for one season. Jazz don't want to waste roster space or money on a guy who won't be with the team next year. Might be for more than the minimum to reward JL III for agreeing to a 1-yr deal. Incentive for Lucas is that he'll probably see some decent playing time behind Burke. With Marvin out, I don't see Burks playing much at PG. Jazz need him in the wing rotation.

If it's not the minimum for one season I'm setting my Raul Neto jersey afire in protest.

Plus, if I'm not mistaken, I think the league actually pays the salaries of minimum players.

When a player has been in the NBA for three or more seasons, and is playing under a one-year, 10-day or rest-of-season contract at the minimum salary, the league reimburses the team for part of his salary -- any amount above the minimum salary level for a two-year veteran3. For example, in 2011-12 the minimum salary for a two-year veteran is $854,389, so for a ten-year veteran, with a minimum salary of $1,352,181, the league would reimburse the team $497,792. Only the two-year minimum salary is included in the team salary, not the player's full salary. They do this so teams won't shy away from signing older veterans simply because they are more expensive than younger veterans.

Googe'd, I think this explains it.
