Jazz trade Devin Harris to Atlanta for Marvin Williams (merged)

I was quite a bit against trading for Jefferson as well. Kind of tacitly accepted it, though, and hoped Jefferson would be different in Utah.

Marvin is good for the organization and everyone was sure Harris was gonna go after Mo. The point on Marvin is his 3 point shooting percentage. Yeah he has all tools to defend, rebounding and hustling but he can not either create his points off the dribble or shoot consistently behind the arc. The last season for him was good and the only thing you can do as a fan is hoping it continues. Spacing and outside shooting is priority for the team and still i can not find a name except MO who shots well and consistently.

I can already see better ball movement just due to Mo's ability to shoot.

Mo passes the ball to Al in the post, Al backs down, draws double team, passes back out to Mo. Defender rushing back to Mo, drawing another help defender - Mo fakes a 3pt shot (defender in the air) and instead passes to a wide open Marv who calmly knocks down the 3pt.

I like this trade, mostly because it's putting a competent player at the 3 and replacing three incompetent (or more in Howard's case over the hill) players at the 3.

That's assuming Bell/Howard/CJ are gone. God I hope so.

You forget that Devin Harris was also making way more than he was worth. So overall I think it's just about a wash.

It's not a wash when contract length is different. In this case it's 2 yrs vs. 1 yr.

I like the fact Marvin potentially has a 2nd year. Boozer was pretty motivated his last 2 seasons; first because he thought there would be a market for him when he had the chance to opt out, then when no one was going to pay him more. he had another "contract year" and posted good numbers.

Marvin is in a similar situation.

I could possibly be the biggest Boozer-support since Sloanfeld left, but Boozer's 2nd-to-last season in Utah he missed 45 games and in the games he did play statistically it was easily his worst season with the Jazz. He played better the next season because he was fully healthy...but just as Boozer couldn't improve his durability because he was in a contract year in 08-09, players can't suddenly find a game because they want a knew contract. Williams will certainly have plenty of motivation to be the best player he can possibly be, but motivation was never really a problem for him - it was about having a game, and Marvin has a solid game to go with above-average size, but his ability just isn't at the level where I'd want to pay him $7.5 mil to do it again. When the season starts I'll sit back and enjoy having him start at SF for us, but financially I just don't think he's the prudent choice.

I'm going to shoot from the hip here and say that that's a bunch of ****ing horse-****. Having the best or second best PnR tandem in the NBA, the Jazz were in the bottom 5? With Sloan as coach? Hard to believe that.

Sure we ran more PnR with Deron and Booze. It was their staple. But we didn't run it with anyone else (even Sap who never ran the PnR until like year 4). And proportionally, we've never run much PnR as a team because we run the flex.

I'm cautiously optimistic. Of course this is because I'm comparing Marvin to CJ Miles instead of Devin Harris, and I'm optimistic about just about every player when compared to CJ.

No. He won't. Marvin Williams has virtually no chance whatsoever to be more than an MLE player when next year is over.

An MLE deal over multiple seasons would be worth more than $7.5 million. He could opt out. He'll only be 26.

Yeah, becasue Devin can't run it. I think Mo can, he did learn from sloan to start after all. And even if he can't, nothing's changed except that now our point can shoot it and spread the defense.
