What's new

Jeremy Evans = Stromile Swift?

If Evens is really like Durrant I'm buying his jersey today. This will be the greatest thing that could happen to me.

To the guy who said that WKU isn't a major D1 program, I won't bother with a response, but I am sure some of the other alums won't be able to resist. There are a lot of WKU fans who get very upset when someone belittles the athletics programs (especially when it is a result of ignorance).

Don't get your knickers in a twist. The Sun Belt conference and Missouri Valley Conference aren't major D1 conferences. I'm not "belittling" the athletics program. Western Kentucky has a very good "mid-major" basketball program. I would certainly rank their basketball success ahead of BYU - at least WKU usually wins a game or two in March. In terms of football, they've been a 1-AA (or 1 FCS - whatever you want to call it) until recently. So again, very good mid-major, but not a "major" D-1 university as I stated.

Back to the topic, I like Evans' energy. I doubt he'll be a "Kevin Durant" but if he can become even a backup wing, then consider it a great pick.

Doubt he'll be a Kevin Durant? I'll go so far as to say he won't sniff Duran't jock.

I actually grew up with jeremy and played high school ball with him. No one on this thread has any clue about him. He can do way more than jump really high. His range actually extends to about 25 to 30 feet out. He can shoot the three, mid range, defend, rebound whatever. Alot of Jazz fans and Nba fans are going to be surprised when he plays. Jeremy is type of player that is very unselfish one that passes first and shoots second. Thats why his stats werent as high at wku because he doesnt just jack up shots like most players. Our coach in high school had to make him shoot the ball because he was so unselfish. And as for comparison to a player he is more like a kevin durant type of player. He's not a post player he played out of position for four years at wku. He played the wing in high school and thats what he'll be in the Nba.

If he officially makes an NBA squad and sees any playing time, then maybe, yeah.

I only watched Evans in the summer league games so I can't speak to his high school exploits and others but here are my impressions.

Evans physically reminds me a lot of a Rookie AK. He is explosive, move well and he is very quick to loose balls.

His best basketball attributes are his length and quickness. He does have good timing for rebounds and blocks.

I didn't see him create any shots for himself but he knew where to be on offense to make himself available for rolls to the hoop. He has the quickness to become a face-up but I didn't see him take a single mid-range shot. Or take more than one dribble.

He showed well on pick and rolls and generally recovered well. He struggled to hold his position on the post despite fighting hard. He struggled to hold rebounding position and often ended up under the basket.

I was pleasantly surprised with his passing. He made 3 or 4 simple passes that lead to good shots for his teammates.

Evans has two NBA ready skills. He can dunk on just about anyone. His pick and roll defense is very good. If he was strong enough to hold rebounding and post position that might be enough to get him on a roster.

IMO Evans looked like his frame could get up to 225 a lot easier than Varnado. Also IMO if he was skilled enough he has the physical tools to be a 3.

One of the reasons that Jeremy didn't put on a lot of weight at WKU is that he was also a member of the Track and Field team (high jump). He did work at adding strength (and was successful in that regard), but didn't work at bulk too much. I imagine if he knew then that he would have a legitimate shot at the NBA he probably would have focused on basketball only and on adding bulk, but hindsight is 20/20. I still do not think that he will end up a monster like Dwight Howard or anything (265lbs), but Tyrus Thomas (225lbs) is a very reachable goal for Jeremy. I can already see that he has added some bulk to his chest and shoulders since the end of the season at WKU, so I expect an entire Summer of training can get him into the 210 range.
