Here's my take:

Even if we assume we'd have to overpay (whatever that may mean) on Clarkson, how does that really jive with the entire context? If we tanked for an entire year to get Exum and waited through many injuries, ended up not wanting to let go of the hope, then significantly overpaid him, how does it look if we were actually start to get some pretty legitimate returns on that investment but then refused to invest more and let him walk? It would be asinine.

Salary cap next year is $118 with a luxury limit of $143. Considering Chris Paul and John Wall cost over $40 million by themselves, $50 million for those 4 is good business.

Back to this breakdown. Let's just say we sign Clarkson to $14 (a little much, but so be it). For summer 2020, we would have the following:

Conley $34.5
Gobert $26.5
Bojan $17.9
Clarkson $14
Jingles $10.9
Royce $8.5
Davis $5
Donovan $5.2
Bradley $3.5
Niang $1.8
TOTAL with Conley - $130 if you include necessary salary fillers
TOTAL without Conley - $98 ish
TOTAL without Conley and Davis - $94 ish
Salary cap is $118

Just imagine with me for a minute. Let's just say we can pull off some sort of Rockets or Clippers type player movement where we open up some cap space. For example, let's just say we trade Conley and a protected 1st to NY for nothing. They are gearing up for summer 2021 to target Giannis, so what do they have to lose? Last summer proved that they aren't a big level free agent destination anyway. And trade Davis to some team like Charlotte or Atlanta who aren't really free agent destinations.

Since there are only 5 teams in the entire league with cap space with only one of them being any good (Miami), maybe we could do some really good work with that cap space. If we become attractive enough for guys like Bojan, maybe we could lure some free agent this summer. I'm dreaming of guys like Jerami Grant, Bogdan Bogdanovic, Joe Harris, Ibaka. Guys that are above the MLE. When summer 2021 comes, we have no money. We're out. Gobert and Donovan will be paid while everybody else is on a contract.

If we could dump Conley for little money in return, we could have somewhere around $20 million or more in cap space. We could be poised for one maybe two more key rotation players with that amount especially since hardly any team has money to spend. We could get good players at a bargain.
 
Seriously who is leading Clarkson in 6th man vote this season??
