Kanter being detained in Romania

don't care for Gulen nor kanter nor the current King of turkey.

But that video of the security guards beating down peaceful protestors on US soil is disturbing. They should be more strict and not allow that kind of barbaric behavior on US SOIL.

I don't know why the security guards are immune from prosecution under US laws or civil law suits in US courts.

I'm not sure what to make of Enes. Enes the basketball player was not a fit for the Jazz, but Enes the human was a likable goof-ball. Now I don't know if he is a hero for standing up to power, or a dough-head not understanding the seriousness of the games he is playing.

I was never a fan of Kanter but I do think he was mismanaged by the Jazz, mainly because of the Corbin era during which KOC backed up Corbin by not allowing Kanter and Favors to develop by trading for Big Al and keeping Sap which to a degree also stunted Favors' growth. I think that was when the emphasis should've been put on Kanter's defense and lateral movement. It never happened and now he is a one-dimensional player, all offense and very weak defense. So, his disenchantment with Utah is understandable.

However, I think he is actually being courageous in standing up to the dictator, and it wouldn't at all surprise me if his family is taking the position they are because of fear of reprisal.

What we're hearing in Oklahoma: Turkey seeks to arrest Kanter.

"The reason behind it is just, of course, my political views," Kanter, who turned 25 Saturday, said in the video. "And the guy who did it is Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the president of Turkey."

Enes Kanter is a man without a country.

The Thunder center said as much this week, but the point was underscored on Friday.

Kanter's home nation of Turkey has issued a warrant for his arrest, said Hadis Fetic, executive assistant to the Thunder center, ensuring his arrest if he returns there.

The basis for the warrant is that Kanter has affiliated himself with the Hizmet movement, which the Turkish government considers a terrorist organization. Kanter has voiced his public support of the movement and its founder Fetullah Gulen and has been a vocal critic of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, this week comparing him to Adolf Hitler.

Though he is a Turkish citizen, Kanter is in the United States on a green card as a Lawful Permanent Resident, and he has not been charged with any crime here.

As such, he's in no danger of arrest in the U.S., nor of being extradited to Turkey, said Joshua Landis, head of the Center for Middle East Studies at the University of Oklahoma.

Gulen, a Turkish preacher and political figure who founded the Hizmet movement — it's also known as the Gulen movement — lives in exile in Saylorsburg, Penn.

The Turkish government has demanded Gulen's extradition to Turkey, but the U.S. has not complied, and its reasoning, Landis said, also protects Kanter.

“America has not agreed that the Gulen group is a terrorist group. ... Therefore, we can't extradite on the basis that (Kanter) is a terrorist," he said.

The United States would require proof of terrorist activity in a court of law, Landis said, to extradite a lawful resident.

The Turkish government blames Gulen's followers for a failed coup last year and has arrested more than 100,000 people in Turkey, accusing them of being involved in the coup attempt, Landis said last week.

After Kanter publicly criticized Erdogan last year, his parents publicly disowned him. Kanter hasn't spoken with them since and said he fears that they would be arrested if he tried to contact them.

The Daily Sabah, a pro-government newspaper in Turkey, first reported the on the warrant for Kanter. Acording to a translation by international news agency AFP, the publication said Turkey would apply for an Interpol “red notice,” which would flag Kanter as a potential terrorist.

A red notice wouldn't affect travel within the United States, and the U.S. likely can work out an agreement with Canada, Landis said, to allow Kanter to travel to Toronto for games against the Raptors.

Kanter's recent troubles began on his 25th birthday.

On May 20, Turkey invalidated his passport. That led to Kanter's detainment in Bucharest, Romania, during a global tour with his Enes Kanter Light Foundation.

Kanter was detained for about four hours but ultimately was allowed to fly to London and then New York City, where he has an offseason home. Kanter said at a news conference on Monday that he will seek U.S. citizenship.

Early Friday, Kanter responded to a report of the warrant with a post on his Twitter account in Turkish. According to AFP's translation, it said “You cannot catch me. Hahaha. Don't waste your energy. I am already going to come (to Turkey) to spit on all of your ugly, hate-filled faces.”

But any travel to Turkey is unlikely — and would be ill-advised.

“There would have to be proof that he's extraditable under American law, and that will not be forthcoming, obviously,” Landis said. “On the other hand, it means he can never go home again — not as an American citizen, not as a Turkish citizen. They're really driving home the message that, ‘You'll never come home again.'”

I really dislike Kanter for his lackluster play here and how he treated the Jazz, but this is a sad situation I wouldn't wish on anyone.

Basketball is one thing. These are peoples lives and freedom being taken away - I can't joke about Kanter in regards to this matter. Especially when you consider his family may have disowned him simply so that they aren't imprisoned or killed.

Overthrowing the government which is there by election is a serious matter. And Kanter explicitly supports this idiotic cult with disgusting ideas and illegal attempts. He is only passport taken in Turkey, and would be imprisoned if he attempts to enter the country. He would be shot in any other country by doing what he already did.
He is a clear liar, cheater, traitor with brain damage. Stop it about "ohh this is about humanity, freedom blabla" without knowing the matter. He clearly manipulates everyone he can against his own country. And he says im not doing something wrong. I pity my time i spent here supporting this scumbag.

Also the worst about him is; his defense sucks.

So how come someone WHO got more than 50% of votes is a dictator? Just because Kanter said so? OR thats what you here in TV? I also read in news once; "American Heroes entered Iraq and saved people from the tyrant!" Well eventually a few millions of civilians have died because of these heroes. TV and newspapers might be very misleading. Everyone is writing their own truths as history. And we as common people just nod them like sheeps.

I follow Kanter closely since his days in Fenerbahçe till now. How he left Fenerbahçe was just stupid and not ethical. How he left Jazz and talked thrashed behind should be just annoying to you as a jazzfan just like me. Wasting one year in Kentucky without even getting to play is his fault. The fact that he couldnt improve his defense is his fault. And he is 100% guilty here. And about his family thing; he shouldn't have been so selfish to put his family in this situation just because he is a rich NBA player and he doesnt need any love from his own country to survive for rest of his life.

He has braindamage and is brainwashed. And he has character problems. Hedo Turkoglu said the same thing about Kanter; that he is totally dumb.

Republics have a tendency to sooner or later elect a dictator. We're getting pretty close here in the US as well. Still Trump has not yet moved to change the Constitution to increase his powers or extend his reign. Erdogan on the other hand has done both.

I think neither of them are dictators. We arent living in early 20th century. The conditions arent set for dictatorship. Even if they have dictator souls inside, they cant be. USA and Turkey not the right countries for that.

What you say about Kanter makes sense because I have not followed him that closely. However, though we may not have dictatorship in the "Western" world, we have lost or are losing democracy. As Noam Chomsky has said we have "manufactured consent" so that those in power are virtual dictators when it comes to important decisions -- note that we rig elections, we censor or influence news reporting, and we use P-R tactics to persuade the electorate of information that supports the government's agendas (e.g., global warming), and we punish truth-telling whistle-blowers like Snowden and Chelsea Manning.
