What's new

Life - official thread

We've had a busy year. Had our fourth child. Oldest turning 8 this month. I'm signing a contract for my first job out of residency. We're going to start building a house that should be a permanent move where our kids will grow up. We just got back from a ~3 week trip (paternity leave) to Utah. Ate at all the favorites (The Philadelphian, Kohinoor, Mi Ranchito, Beto's, Iggy's, etc.) This was the first year I didn't really follow the NBA draft at all. Looks like that worked out in my favor. My wife and I will be taking our first trip sans kids (unless you count the two days we flew to Texas to find housing back when we had two kids) in a couple months and then will be back out in Utah for a wedding later this year. Fun times!

Another awesome post.
Congrats infectionbro!

Do tell on the home renovations. Pictures if possible.

I moved into this ****shack about 2.5 years ago. It had a messy yard and an old garage out back that was falling down + full of trash. Old, disgusting trash. The only way my girlfriend and I could fit into it (she moved in just over a year ago) was for me to totally overhaul the garage and convert it into living space and storage. And we've put tons into the yard. Everything has an eclectic and salvaged feel because, well, most of it is. I like working with what's on-hand. Now that we have two different structures to live in + a nice, tended yard to relax in as we move between them, things are super good. But, the yard and the garage need one more wave of improvements + I'm building a little sleeping nook in this big old avocado tree that's out back. I'll post a few pictures when it's all done later this year.

This is an epic post, imo.

Hits so much of what I wish I had time to do.
NAOS.. sometime I need to corrupt you with an "archaeology" outing. Big trucks, lots of dirt, lots of virgin territory (artifacts), and lots of beer.

sounds good to me, mayne. Depending on the area, I have some insanities/preoccupations to lend to that kind of trip.

Did your new development ever get a proper name?

After reading that post I'm surprised NAOS has time to peruse Jazzfanz on a daily basis... LOL

My time on here has gone down for the past couple of weeks. And, no kids, so....

My life has really good flexibility right now, so I'm trying to capitalize on that.

Awesome man. Fixing stuff up is a blast. Glad you're enjoying it and the new place. Would love to see the sleeping nook. Would also love to have an avocado tree, but that ain't happening lol.

My life has really good flexibility right now, so I'm trying to capitalize on that.

We took a step back/break from trying to name the project. Felt we were trying too hard and we aren't in much of a rush.

I thought you said the city council voted it down, or something like that.

They did. But we have made concessions and it will get approved.
Some day (maybe PM) I will tell you what really happened behind the scenes and what concessions I needed to make.

I don't have to give up any density or anything... but have to shift things around based on "what can be seen from the front porch of the Jacob Hamblin home."
The property is within the boundaries of the 1st ward.

So you had to move the clothing optional pool?

Unfortunately, the avocados aren't edible. There are two theories about why: the tree wasn't in peak health when I moved in (so maybe the fruits will get better as we nurse the tree to better health?), the tree is old and probably not from a graft/variety of avocado tree was 'dialed-in' taste-wise (and so the fruits will never taste good). But we can feed the fruits to our black soldier fly larvae, and they produce lots of good fertilizer and insect repellent.

I'm trying to get more into the fun side of fixing stuff up. I've spent most of my adult life either poor and studying or poor and traveling. That means you don't have any **** to fix. Ever. So, I can really burn out sometimes, since I don't like to constantly feel like I'm refurbishing tons of pieces of ****. Right now, on top of all this other stuff I'm doing, I've got this old Schwinn tandem I'm fixing + restoring a 1983 BMW R100RT, keeping my 220,000 Subaru going, converting an old broken guitar into a resonator guitar, restoring an old Rhodes piano (I love these things, but I can't even ****ing play them), etc. All these projects looking at me.... it has sort of made me crazy.
