Locked On Jazz 10/16/17 Hood RFA Notes

It IS irrelevant unless you clear half the roster. You have to waive all non-guaranteed contracts Sefolosha, Udoh, Jerebko, O'Neale, have to renounce JJ, Favors, Neto and Exum to get to a 25% max. You cannot even get to a 30% max money. To a huge extent it is irrelevant. Who is the player in FA that you are doing this for?

Sure... there is a shot you it might not be irrelevant but the chance is minuscule. I wouldn't even put it at 1%. Definitely not worth putting off the Hood extension if you think extending him for what he wants makes sense.

I just imagine Rodney is at 18M per season and DL is at 17.5 and they go "nah we need to keep our cap sheet clean in... we pass".

This is likely Hood wanting $20M per and the Jazz wondering if he can stay on the court to justify it. If we roll the dice and he can't stay healthy he comes at a discount. If he plays really well how much more is he getting than $20 per? Who has the space and who will offer it?

Im talking about the FA market for Hood, there isnt much money out there this year.

I didn't even figure roster spot cap holds... are we even able to get to 25% without trading Rubio or Ingles?

The Jazz only have 81.5 million in contracts on the books next year (before cap-holds). They can waive Udoh, Sefolosha, and Jerebko and get below 70 million. Add on Hood and Dante's cap holds and assume we waive Favors/JJ cap hold. That gives us enough room to sign players before extending Hood.

Dante and Hood's capholds are about 22-23M.

No, it's just under 21 million.

And who knows what the Jazz do with Exum. They could get that contract done fast and sign him for 10 million, taking 5 million off that total. Or who knows, maybe they trade him. Maybe they figure out a way to trade Burks? Who knows? You don't and I dont.

There are so many variables to act like it isnt in the best interest to have flexibility (among other reason also, no one is acting like this is the ONLY reason) is ridiculous.

Yup gives us a about 9-10 M btw... we could keep all those cap holds and and one of the unguaranteed guys and sign someone for 8.1 M... all while keeping Hood. They would clear maybe 1-2 M in addition per year money... so it is irrelevant unless we had the move you discussed plus more.

So it's only worth having cap-space if it's 25%?

No, but it's only worth waiving all those players or giving up assets to get rid off long-term money(Ingles/Burks) only if the player you are doing this for is good enough. Who is the player who will come to Utah for lets say 15M who is worth losing half the roster for?

Dante's caphold is $14,977,156, Hood's caphold is $7,160,593. That's over 22M.

I think it is a reason but it's much lower on the list than health and consistency.

No but I would want that much if we went scorched earth to clear space.

That's the thing - for it to be worth clearing that much space, the player we are getting must be damn worth it. And those players are usually not 10-12-15M level players. You need high upside/max type of player in order to make this worth it.

It's kind of like anything could happen and remaining flexible is an advantage.

But please, keep telling us how you know how everything between now and 2018 FA will pan out and that flexibility on Hood is irrelevant just like Rubio in Quin's offense (then he scores back to back 20 point games).
