I had a short conversation with a gold bug yesterday who told me he thinks gold is going to $4000 and then said he's managing his retired mother's IRA. Please pray for this woman.

Prayers didn't work. Gold has declined from 1700 to 1300. . . . it is after all a commodity, and with oil/fuel pretty much holding in the $4/gal diesel price, and large scale mining achieving record efficiencies which have made many low-grade deposits "profitable". . . . . Gold may sag to $1000 or even less with lots of profitable production even at that price. How much gold can we eat, anyway?

I don't think gold will go that low just yet. Many gold mines are shutting down due to the drop in gold prices.(link below) I think it will level out around where it is at now and probably stay there for the next year or two. Although another crisis of confidence could make it balloon again.

great link. . . . it does show what I'm saying about how large-scale operations can achieve lower costs of production. . . .and it does give me some information I didn't have.

Economies of scale.

Economies of scale.

Today the most serious things that affect our financial security are government power and policies. Whether gold is an effective store of capital, or other assets . . . . is going to be tested repeatedly by market manipulators operating under cover of protections or "stimuli" being favored by actions of our government. . . .

The fundamental reason our welfare is dependent not on government subsidies paid out to some elements of the "voter base" of some political party or another, but actually upon our political will as a nation to restrict the size, power, and effect of government influence on our property, markets, and social policies. The power we tolerate in the hands of politicians is a negative power in it's effects on our welfare, compared to the profits the heavy hand of government power can bring to the fat cats whose minions prowl the halls of congress and manipulate our President. . . .

That's, you know, what I meant to say, of course.

Too many tourists for me and just a bit too far from civilization in case you got sick or needed to get something done quickly....

For my taste, the place I would live in the Philippines would be Lingayen. . . . Not so far from some really nice beaches, some good parks like "Hundred Islands", and Baguio. Manila would be a day trip. . . . I don't think it's been developed for tourists. . . .

Second place would be a little burb of Cebu City. . . a few hours up the coast with ocean front. But then I haven't been on more than fifty of the seven thousand islands. . . . .

Lingayen sounds like a cool place!! I wonder why it hasn't been developed though? I'd have to ask my Philippino friend about that. Apparently she prefers to living in Thailand, I remembered her saying that it has more "energy" and a better "vibe".

Living in an island sounds cool on paper, except when you suddenly became sick and needed to get to a hospital FAST.

your friend is a "filipina". . . . probably feels a bit sidelined by the Catholic majority, assuming she's someone you'd meet in your church.

The Phillipine culture is intensely stratified on financial criteria, not so much on religious lines. There are strong nationalistic sentiments, as well as intense biases across local or language lines as well.

I found it curious that there were probably hundreds, if not thousands, of details that stood as standards which people had to comply with to maintain their "face". . . . girls would be ashamed to carry a paper sack in the street because it was deemed "low class conduct". . . . for example. . .

Americans were in most quarters accorded status as visiting Gods from the States. . . . where local perceptions held that our streets are paved with gold and we're all fantastically wealthy. . . .

I have tried to set that as a standard for my wife, but so far she has failed to appreciate my true status in the fabric of society. . . . . lol
