Looking for genuine discourse re: Donald Sterling/NBA

Wow.

Silver banned Sterling for life and fined him 2.5 million. I think that is a very strong reaction and sends the clear message that the NBA rejects all forms of hate.

Wonder what this "ban" includes. Just games? practices? Can they ban him from his own property? (offices and arena)

I am pretty pissed of about this.

this might push me over the edge to never ever spend a single dollar on the nba.

first for wasted years of crobain. now a leaugue that does not support freedom of speech in someones OWN PRIVATE HOME!

meaybe i'll cool down and come back.

but i feel like i am done with the NBA

I think it sends a very clear message that the NBA was scared absolutely ****-less that The Clipper players were not going to show up for their next playoff game.

How this plays out after the playoffs is over may be a little different.

That would mark the end of the NBA. Players could cry racism, discrimination, bigotry, unfair work place etc whenever they didn't like their team or contrCt situation. You would have 100 or more Derek fishers every season. Utter chaos.

This is truly a sticky mess for the nba and Silver & company are going to have to navigate this just right. If they misstep they risk creating a precedent or an environment in which there are major shifts in the fundamental nba landscape.

Precedent created
: Secretly record any NBA owner conveying an unpopular opinion and get him banned for life and be forced to sell his team.

It could be fun to see what kind of skeletons in closets prospective owners could blackmail out of people. Want an NBA team in your city? Just send in a bodacious gold-digging skank to blackmail the closest owner and step in to buy it from under him. I can see that spurned ownership group in Seattle forming a plan to uncover a homophobe owner as we speak.

Sterling may very well be a raging racist, and that is not cool. Discrimination is an ugly thing, but the way this all went down is just as ugly if you ask me. Let the games begin!

True, I had not thought about that. If the team is sold and Sterling is no longer conected to the Clips in anyway it shouldn't be a problem.

I don't think this is over yet.

Its like Game Of Thrones.

All these billionaires fighting for power.

Sounds like magic johnson played the game better than donald sterling.

Well played magic....
Dont hate the playa, hate the game

Like Silver said, regardless of the comments being made inside his own home, those comments and views are now public.

Here's the announcement: https://espn.go.com/video/clip?id=espn:10857589

Maybe I'll feel differently later, but today I feel this was absolutely the right thing to do. Having Sterling still associated with the league would have put his players, his coach, and the whole Clippers organization in an untenable position.

I do sympathize with the people who are outraged that this came to light via a secretly recorded private conversation, though.

ok so black people/african americans or whatever the hell they wanna be called.
who have "fought" for equality, freedom and all other human rights.

thinks it is okay to take some of those human rights away.

NICE!
