Looking for genuine discourse re: Donald Sterling/NBA

This guy has been a well-documented racist nutbag for decades. TMZ's release of audio obviously magnified things, but his sentiments revealed through that audio (doctored or not) is NOT news.

Truth be told on the NBA and racism!

"So on Tuesday, the NBA set its social and racial sensitivity bar at its highest rung. It lynched a mean old fool who committed the crime of being overheard speaking like one."

"Already, some have suggested the NBA has set a standard for itself that will be tough to meet. Nonsense."

"After all, having proudly and eagerly announced that the vulgar rapper — is that redundant? — Drake would be the celebrity host of the 2016 NBA All-Star Game, it’s not as if Commissioner Adam Silver will withdraw the invite."

"Perhaps Drake can perform one of his many hate-filled numbers in which black men are called “N—as,” women are obscenely objectified as good for only one thing, and “f–k” is frequently rapped as a verb, noun, adverb, prefix or suffix."

"In other words, what Drake records and performs in public for a living fully meets with the NBA’s approval and even big-event promotion. But what old coot Donald Sterling spoke in private led to a summary execution."

"And it’s not as if the arrests of NBA players for genuine crimes — such as, say, beating women — will be dealt with any more harshly now that Sterling has been slaughtered and served to the public as someone whose behavior the NBA won’t tolerate!"

"On ESPN, where the worst acts are regularly and generously selected for both sanctuary and stardom, Jalen Rose put 1 and 1 together and demanded Sterling’s head."

"This is the same Jalen Rose who, as a former Michigan player, was featured in a 2011 documentary about the early-1990s Michigan-Duke basketball rivalry. Rose trashed Duke’s black players as “Uncle Toms,” apparently because they could speak discernible English and attended some classes while in college. Shame on them!"

"This Jalen Rose now blames his transgressions — including theft, while an NBA player — as “the Detroit coming out in me.” What does that mean? As a black man from Detroit we should expect no better?"

I have no idea what Drake is like, but there's a world of difference between living with the racist views of someone the NBA hired to perform at an All-Star game, and living with the racist views of an owner of a team.

....."world of difference?" It's true that Mushnick is a Jew and so is Sterling......so he's certainly going to side with and sick up for Sterling even to a fault. However, I think his analysis is spot on when it comes to the "hypocrisy" of the NBA and there overall reaction! Obviously, you don't want an owner to publicly express his disdain for black players/people in a league dominate by such. But his expression was certainly less public than what the rapper puke spews out PUBLICLY every time he cuts a CD or has a concert! (do rappers have "concerts?") Today's NBA not only caters to the rappers.....they encourage what they represent in a public forum that has put young impressionable teens on a pathway to destruction and ruin!

I hope they take the team away from him.
so that proves freedom of speech(in private) is dead.

I'm working my way through this thread, and I've seen 'free speech' come up a few times now. So it's worth restating what has been stated already numerous times elsewhere for this issue and for countless other issues preceding it.

"Free speech" in the US context means freedom from Government/state restriction/coercion/punishment etc. of speech. It DOES NOT protect one from the social or economic consequences of speech, such as social sanction or sponsors pulling their money out. Can we please, please all acknowledge this and dispense with free speech complaints, which clearly do not apply in this case?

Like others, I am quite troubled by this violation of privacy. I do agree with laws that protect people's privacy by prohibiting unapproved recording of private conversations (though I would relax the law for whistleblowers if feasible). With that said (and this might be addressed in later replies), it appears that Sterling knew, approved, and even requested that his private conversations be recorded, although this doesn't excuse selling those conversations to a sleazy operator like TMZ. Also, the recording is out there in the public domain, so even IF we disapprove of how it got there, we cannot ignore it.

Yes, Sterling is a creep and a racist, and sponsors, players, coaches, NBA Execs undoubtedly knew of his past and overlooked it, because it was good for business. Yes, there is a good deal of hypocrisy here. This, however, simply cannot be ignored. It is so blatant, so 'out there' that there is no choice but to act on it.

While I would like to see that people are held responsible for deeds as well as words, any notion that words don't matter is hopelessly naive or willfully ignorant.

However we got to this point, I'm glad we are there. Sterling should have been outed and ousted years ago. It's the comeuppance he has long deserved, so I won't shed tears for him (though I do worry about the ever encroaching loss of privacy in today's social media world).

Finally, I am disappointed (but not surprised) at the number of Sterling apologists here. How this info came to light is, I believe, a very legit concern, but in sticking up for Sterling is a poorly chosen and ultimately losing cause.

So is there some secret cabal among Jews in which they pledge to always stick up for each other regardless of the situation?

Nice post.

I only wanted to point out, at least what I've gathered, is that nobody is actually sticking up for Sterling but concerned about what is seen as private conversations being made public and being forced to sell the team because of what was said in addition to the fines and ban. ( I could be wrong, I haven't read all posts.)

After hearing he gave permission for the recordings for whatever reason I'm not really worried about that a whole lot even though I still think the recordings were intended for personal use to help him remember stuff.

The forcing of him to sell the team was a big question mark and concern, but if the NBA has people sign contracts and they can support the breach of contract legitimately in this case then that's fine too. Like it or not what you say can negatively impact the association and the team. It's possible the NBA has wanted a reason to get rid of him for a while and when the opportunity presented itself they jumped on it. They did seem to act quickly and know in advance what to do.

so wife beater jason kidd does not get a lifeitme ban.
but donald who spoke in private gets a lifetime ban and suffers financial losses.

how about crymello DUI!

heck seriously bro i rather have people talking all kinda crap behind closed doors.

all of the above crimes and others put PEOPLE IN REAL(or potential) Physical harm.

Joker_clap.gif

bra-****ing-vo.

BEAT YOUR WIFE.(jason kidd
ENDANGER people will driving drunk.(carmello anthony, and lots of others.)
Shoot up Strip clubs(stephen jackson)
3rd degree rape(ruben patterson)
aggravated burglary(kirk snyder)
sexual harassment and retaliation(isiah thomas)
third-degree assault, menacing, and criminal possession of a weapon (lance stephenson)

or how about zach randolph a summarary of his rapsheet
May 2002: Arrested for underage drinking. Randolph was 20 years and 329 days old at the time. Clearly, Randolph a rebel without a cause.

April 2003: Punched Ruben Patterson in the face, causing "the Kobe stopper" to lose a large amount of blood. Was suspended for his involvement in the altercation.

December 2003: Arrested for driving without a license while also under the influence of marijuana.

December 2006: Two vehicles, both registered under his name, were pulled over by Portland Police for racing in a 20-mph speed zone. Simply baffling.

December 2007: Sued for sexual assault after an incident with a stripper, although Randolph was not prosecuted due to lack of evidence.

April 2009: Arrested for driving under the influence. Was initially denied bail. Charge was eventually dropped to one count of reckless driving.

May 2010: Randolph's friend was pulled over while driving a marijuana-filled car that was registered under Randolph's name. He was not in the car at the time and was thus not arrested, but police pulled the car over after receiving a tip that Randolph was involved in a drug ring. The investigation is ongoing.

yet they are al still associated to the nba and have not received a liftime ban.

but saying something in the privacy of your own ****ing home. that puts no one in danger. deserves a lifetime ban.

yes we can ignore it
if journalist had some moral compas. and are not all about sensationalism and fear mongering. their moral compass should tell them to detsroy the tape and not listen to it.

we live in a world where personal responsibility and morality seems gone.

invasion of privacy seems to be done by governments and citizens.
that in my book is worse than spouting bigotry.

so too bad that lots of people listen to the tape.

they are in my book worse than sterling

Again, there's a lot of difference between a owner and a player. Owners can and should take all of those factors into account when deciding whether or not to sign a player. On the other hand, players who are drafted CANNOT take anything into account when "selecting" their owner. Therefore an owner has a much higher standard to maintain, in my opinion.

fact: sterling di not physically harm any human being. he endagnered no-one. he just hurt some feelings.

another fact: half of those (convicted/suspected) players actually HURT and TRAUMATIZED real people, the other half of those players brought real people in real physical or evan mortal danger.

political correctness has gone beyond reason
