What's new

Luol Deng ends up in Utah (Rumour)

From last year you dunce lol.

Book played 20.7 MPG and CJ played 12.2 MPG. I bet Book is gone in FA if Deng signs here and Deng gets all of his minutes, and CJ's minutes are all taken by Burks at the 2 and Deng at the 3. That's about 27ish minutes for Deng off the bench

Not how that works at all.

so he would be cool with like almost zero minutes? (I don't see cj playing any minutes and booker extremely few)
It'd be like 15-20 minutes a night on a fully healthy roster.

Possibly more idk. There should probably be an effort to limit Hayward's minutes so he doesn't wear out, and all the starters really. Deng would help a lot with that as a bench guy you could trust.

Dang is too old and his game is already starting to go downhill. We need a younger vet, players entering their prime.

Can we stop mentioning Hayward playing the 2?

He's morphed into a 3. He's a fulltime SF now. Our defence is good enough, we don't need Deng to start. Rodney will start ahead of him, Deng provides leadership, injury insurance, and good backup minutes.
For how much?
Is deng cool with that role?

Get that Deng is a wing out of your head.
He's had trouble his first year in Miami and his performance got better once he stepped in as the small big for the injured Bosh. He's too slow at this point to guard most wings or beat them. He's still long, strong and quick enough to compete with most bigs and his perimeter game makes it similarly hard for most of them to defend him in return. Think of him as a Draymond Green with a deteriorating body.
I hope offer isn't longer than 2 years. Means moving on from Booker.
I'm down with this if deng is.

I'm hoping btp is the most accurate of what would happen with deng..... Short term contract, small role as a backup big with lyles still getting at least 20 minutes.

I agree about him being too slow to play the 3 much.

Definitely, but I don't see that happening. Just think he comes in primarily as a big. Silesian mentioned he played half his minutes at the 5 for Miami - so yeah, my guess is mostly big for Utah and I think that is really where they have a need - at that stretch big.

Apologies for my typo, he was a little less than half time at 4, not 5.

Deng only makes sense in the Iggy role (i.e. play minutes at the 3 and 4, off the bench). And, only if his contract doesn't prevent keeping core pieces after next year (but if the Millers want to pay some tax, then I'm totally cool with it).

I can see why Deng may like this. It may stretch out his career and therefore make him some extra money. Also, the Iggy role has plenty of legit NBA cred at this point, and he seems perfectly suited for it.

there's a lot of caveats to clear for both Deng and the Jazz that would make this a long shot, but if we can replace Booker and Ingles/Chris Johnson/Lillsap with Luol Deng??? Sign me the **** up. Again, I'm just not sure how to make it work for everybody but now I'm getting my hopes up.

There's also the Duke connection here. I think some players at this point of their career (Deng's) start thinking about how they're going to stick in the league a little longer + after their playing careers are over. Deng may be interested in what Quin can teach him. If he's getting 25 to 28 minutes a night + is utilized in key late-game situations and in playoffs when small ball goes into affect, then I think he could be happy with that.

As much as I love Favors and Gobert, we need an alternative versus certain match-ups. If we're trying to win now, then we can't rely on Lyles to be the sole alternative. Deng definitely makes sense for us (terms of contract permitting).
