OK, here's the scenario. And I'm not saying Memphis is even remotely interested. There have been no rumors.

Assume the choices are as follows:

Marvin Willaims is traded to Memphis for their pick. They demand and receive top-3 protection (trade unlikely to happen otherwise).

Option A
1. Utah gets Prince (and he's on the books for around $7M next year).
2. Utah gets Memphis pick (provided they don't win a top-3 pick in the lottery).
3a. Right now, that pick would be #14.
3b. If Memphis makes the playoffs - even as the 8th seed - it likely drops to #21 and could be a few spots worse.
3c. If Memphis makes the playoffs, there is a chance they knock GS out. But also a fairly good chance - even more likely, IMO - that it might be Phoenix or Dallas that gets knocked out of the playoffs.
4. Next season, Prince might be the starting SF on the Jazz. In any case, he will be a rotation player and will take up salary space.

Option B
Marvin remains on the roster. After the season, Jazz retain the equivalent cap space of a MAX contract ($30M+ in expirings, less cap holds and new contracts for Favors (done) and Hayward (likely)). Jazz are free to facilitate trades like they did with Golden State or go after a top-quality FA or perhaps two in the $7-9M range, including re-signing Williams.

I'll admit this is a tough one for me. I think cap space will be valuable this summer. I vote trade, however, for 2 reasons:
a. Utah gets worse this season helping their pick
b. Memphis does have a shot at making the playoffs (only 2 1/2 back of GS).

Don't like Prince on the roster, but he's an expiring contract next season. Even a pick in the 20's would be decent value for Marvin. Might be able to combine that pick with GS's (let's assume BOTH teams make the playoffs) for one in the late teens if there is a player Lindsey really likes in that range.

I have no idea what is happening under this extremely scenario'ish scenario, but I would like to get rid of Marv.

Trade Marv. FINAL ANSWER.

Ohh...I'm sorry, the correct answer was: Stand pat, playoff push. Thanks for playing.

I think cap space will be helpful next offseason but we don't need THAT much cap space. Prince's contract would help us distribute that over a couple years. Plus, we need to tank. Let's put more effort into Jabari being our 3/4 next year rather than staying pat with Marvin because we'll "need" a 3/4 next year.

I guess the questions are:
Does a draft choice at #14 net us something better than a resigned Marvin? If Yes, then trade him.
Does Marvin resign here at a reasonable rate with the possible expectation of a declining role? If No, trade him.
Is Marvin a calming influence and teacher in the locker room? (I'm pretty sure Jefferson does this and could be had for much cheaper.) If no, trade him.
Otherwise keep him on.

I think its best to cycle short bad contracts until you find someone you actually like spending the money on.

Example. If we dont do the trade and we sign Marv to a 4 year deal about at about 6 mil per (just a guess)... then is that better or worse than having Prince for only one year?? The answer is you want to have the shorter contract. We dont want Marv for another full contract. Having Prince's short deal is an asset of sorts.

Do trade, Memphis and GS both get season ending injuries, we get 3 lottery picks, all 3 move up into the top 3 spots. Win.

Memphis would want their pick lottery-protected.

Perhaps bad thread title.

I guess in sum it comes down to
a) trade Marvin, likely get the #21 and have Prince for 1 year, with restrictions on what the Jazz could do in FA.
b) retain Marvin, let his contract expire and have a MAX slot available to either sign FA's or facilitate trades.

Fine, I would take the top 2 picks and the 14th.

very hard choice, I guess I'd rather have a lot more little injuries that makes us lose games. I feel like the cap space helps us in the long run with getting back to a competitive level.
