Mathews signs offer sheet w/Blazers (5 yrs/34 mil)

Not to worry though, "We'll look at it on Monday and see what it is," Jazz general manager Kevin O'Connor said (https://www.deseretnews.com/article/700047176/Matthews-signs-offer-with-Portland.html). Great to know after the weekend's rest full of energy KOC will look into it on Monday. Gotta be fresh before looking at the situation at hand. Some here might suggest to look at it Sunday even or maybe Sat night, but that would obviously be too much to ask. We certainly don't want to rush into this and work through the weekend to do so.

I didn't feel like reading every single post in this thread but from what I have read, I've gathered this. The offer was 5 years, 33M. That's 6.6M per. Wow, like almost everyone else on here I have to agree. Let him walk. To play devil's advocate though, consider this about his game. While slightly undersized, he is still a very good defender. Not average defender. He's a very good on the ball defender. That's huge in and of itself. Then, offensively, he's not great but for our fifth option, he's solid. He shot 48% from the floor which is excellent for a guard, 38% from three which is about average, 83% from the line, and put up some okay stats in other areas. I personally think we'll match. I don't think we should. However, if we don't, who else is out there? We'd have to sign some wing, no?

No. Its the full MLE (Which Ross Siler was predicting he would get, since the end of the season) plus, they front loaded it... again. It has a $9.2mil up front bonus, just like with Millsap. This is how we know that Portland's only intention is to **** the Jazz, who's owner doesn't have as deep of pockets.

Portland, which is still looking for a permanent general manager after Kevin Pritchard was fired last month, told the Matthews camp that the 6-foot-5 shooting guard was its No. 1 free-agent target. Young called the offer "pretty strong," a description neither team is likely to refute.

The agent even said Portland told him, "We may have overpaid, but if we're going to take a run we'll give our best shot."

You know how bad the contract is when the one signing him said he's overpaid. Wow.

They don't get thecontract until Monday. Untl then they have nothing but internet posts to look at.

It's $34-million deal with a $9.2 million up-front payment. We certainly need not waste 2 days before evaluating, even if some minor details are not yet available.

I'm as low on Brewa as any Jazz fan, but I'm not opposed to bringing him back at a good price. He is a solid NBA wing to bring off the bench, but he shouldn't get more than 20 minutes a game or so.

If he comes here he will and that's why I don't want anything to do with Brewer. Your not as low on him as me apparently. There are better options at SG than Brewer.

have you ever thought that they may allready no what they are going to do? match it then make portland wait the full seven days so they cant do anything else for seven days. if we match now then they can start searching for somebody else that the jazz might want. this way we tie them up for seven days.

Btw, take a look at this: https://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/jazz/49907340-87/jazz-matthews-offer-williams.html.csp

Does this sound like KOC has been actively negotiating with Wes or perhaps like someone who told him to go find another offer, like Siler reported? And if we thought 25 mil offer sheet was coming, why not talk to Wes and try to agree to similar deal, but without toxic first year. Looks like KOC was completely out of the loop on this whole thing, doesn't it?

No. Only looks like that if your reading something that isn't there.

To avoid toxic first year, when you are so close to luxury tax and don't have that much money to pay up front.

This contract does not effect the LT more than the 5.7. The Jazz have to pay the 9.2 but I am almost positive it does not effect the tax like you are trying to claim. You are way to hung up on the toxic first year.

The bad part about this contract is 34 M for Wes. That's way too much for him.

Well, when Brew was here when everyone was healthy, Sloan actually gave Brew more minutes that to Wes and a starting spot. In fact, before the traded Brew, Wes came off the bench to log whole 10 mins. So, perhaps bringing back Brew is not so bad - for Sloan that is.

Really? Aldridge reported 5 years, 33M. He mentioned the bonus as well but those were the numbers he gave and he's one of the actually reliable sources usually.

This is ridiculous. The article clearly said Jazz were expecting 25 mil. And you suggest they were in the loop? You know what being in the loop means? Let me give you an idea. Nets make an offer to Booz for 75 mil, and before the ink is dry on it, Booz signs with Bulls for 80. Bulls clearly were in the loop. When you expect 25 mil and offer comes in at 34, which KOC had no clue about and will only look at it on Monday, I would say we were not in the loop, wouldn't you?
