Mathews signs offer sheet w/Blazers (5 yrs/34 mil)

Meet your new starting SG for the Utah Jazz: Ronnie Brewer.

Paul Allen sure is pissed still about us getting Deron. He's been trying to screw us every year. That's way too much for Wesley. I've been a HUGE fan of MAtthews, but I don't think the Jazz should match.

Re-sign Brewer, go with what we have and get a #10 pick next season when we finish 11th in the WC. We should get no worse than a guy like Xavier Henry.

LET THE REBUILDING BEGIN!!!

Screw Brewer we had him once, do not bring him back. I don't hate brewer but there is a reason the Jazz let him go and that the Grizz haven't re-signed him.

I think Brewer is a great guy, but I'm not super excited with the idea of losing KK, Boozer, and Wesley and signing Brewer.

According to the report on sltrib.com, Matthews' agent told the Jazz it would take the full MLE to keep him, and the Jazz told them, "Well, go see if you can get that, then."

I'm betting they keep him. Williams is probably on the phone right now with KOC informing him of exactly that.

mr gm borat: iam shure glad you are not the jazz gm you would never make the playoffs. you have a lot of good points but you fall short of the knowledge it takes to be a gm.

Drafting the great white bust, letting the 2nd best player on the team (by far) walk for what will probably become nothing (just like the Harpring TPE will), losing a player that just set a record for highest 3-pt FG% over a season, and either losing or overpaying for the only cool part about last year.

This offseason is terrible.

...so just go ahead and slit your throat and be done with it!!!

As much as I love Wes we have to let him walk.

What scares me more than anything is the years on that deal. Haven't we learning anything?
Never sign a player to a long term deal based on ONE good year.

Good luck in Portland Wes. You are a good guy, and were a pleasure to watch last year.

What makes you think he would accept 4 and 16 when he just got 9 Million more than that?

He was an RFA (which dissuades teams from pursuing him as he is not completely Free Agent) and CJ kind of set the market with 4/16 before. So, it is certainly reasonable to assume he could accept it. Of course that was if we started negotiations and actually moved our asses. According to Siler, KOC told him to find an offer from someone else. You know, same thing he told CJ and Millsap before.

Just to make it clear what Siler is reporting:

"From the start of free agency, Matthews’ camp was believed to have told the Jazz it would take a full midlevel deal to re-sign him. With that as the only option they were presented, the Jazz suggested Matthews find an offer elsewhere."

Of course everyone here, except Borat, who suggested that if HE were GM, instead of KOC, he would have "locked up" Matthews for $16 million in the first moments of free agency, already knew that, I spoze.

Yes, if we are told he wants midlevel at the start of free agency, the only possible move is to tell him to get it elsewhere, watch other SG FA leave, and then brace yourself for 25 mil offer sheet.

Say what? If Matthews had been prepared to take 25 million, as falsely reported, then he would have. He didn't.

Of course, had he done so, the Jazz could have matched, as they still can.

so no negotiations. call went like this
wes agent: we like full mle
jaz frontoffice:Well, go see if you can get that, then.

what kinde negotiation is that

i bet after inviting wes and his agent to the jazz office
and sit down and talk
explain why they want him but cant give full mle(needing a big man etc), whatever give some tea and cookies talk some more
offe rup long term at lower salary etc etc. jazz would have gotten a better deal.

BUT no it takes too much work to do it the right way. too much energy. so screw you jazz front office

Jazz thought he would because they were bracing themselves for that sum, according to Siler. No one expected offer would come so high. Jazz were just out of the loop on this one. They told Wes to look for offer from other teams from the start and that was the end of it.
