Mock Draft Exercise #1 - Pre-NCAA Tournament

Phoenix needs help in a lot of areas, but I'll give them JT Toppin, who has been productive all year as a 19 y,o. soph and whose shooting has been gradually improving. I think he's a 1st-rd talent. The alternatives were Ian Jackson, Will Riley and Isaiah Evans. Incidentally, this is the pick Utah traded to Phoenix.

@Handlogten's Heros is up to finish us off.

Imma take this Yaxel guy. Pretty sure when I watch his tape I’ll fall in love.

When is Richie Saunders gonna get picked?

I actually think this turned out pretty well. That mid lottery to mid 20's range is still so flat/fluid in my mind right now that I don't really have a problem with any of the picks.

Joan Beringer is just a puzzling prospect for me. If he was an extraordinary athlete or had amazing physical tools I could see it, but he really doesn't pop off the screen. Regardless, you're taking a guy incredibly far away with the hopes of him being a role player. Seems like a longshot for not a huge reward.

He's very fluid for his size and seems to have really good hands for his size, in my opinion.

I think the big question is how big is he really. He looks big compared to the competition, but the competition doesn't look like NBA sized guys. Combine measurements rarely swing my opinion of a player, but he might be one where it does. If he comes back with a huge wingspan/standing reach then I think he's a worthy investment.

To be clear, I think he would be great as a second round draft and stash guy. I agree with Cy that having these types of players in the development program could be very valuable to our future team. I wouldn't draft him in the first round.

I think his fluidity looks fine mostly, but sometimes he moves around like a goober and I can’t tell if it’s bc he doesn’t know what he’s doing or he just moves that way. Either way, it’s hard for me to look at him and say that guy is an A+ athlete. He’s athletic, but does not look like a freak.

His supposed measurements look fine, but not out of this world. But like you alluded to, measurements are just measurements. It doesn’t tell you how he plays basketball and there’s a lot more to being a defensive C than just athleticism. He’s young and is inexperienced, so it means he can learn faster, but it’s a big assumption to think he can become a smart enough defender and also to what extent are we talking about here…backup C? Youth does not automatically mean potential. To me it’s high bust potential, low reward.

Pretty much anyone is fine in the late first and especially as a stash…but the part the puzzles me is what I’m seeing vs what is being described. Also, I think DX had him like 10th which is actually insane to me.

He's an extraordinary athlete imo.

In the highlight video I posted he has a dunk where he does a two hand tomahawk (I believe that's what it would be called) and the he taps the ball to the back of his neck. The level of vertical pop he has with his length, and the potential to grow more due to his age is too much to pass up on. Plus he has good enough feet and lateral mobility to do some switching and hedging along with being a drop big.

Jazz have enough projects at other positions. I didn't see anyone available who I think has realistic + starter potential. Jazz need some Kessler insurance and if the plan is to keep tanking it would be nice to have another big to develop.

The way I see it is the Jazz's biggest issue is defense. Beringer is the best defensive prospect in the draft outside of Flagg. Yes, since we have Walker it's going to be a minutes cap on his ability to contribute, but making sure we can play defensively without Walker on the court will be huge moving forward into the competitive years.

If Beringer needs two years to develop physically I don't see that as an issue.

I mean, I don’t think he’s any more special of an athlete than a guy like Jericho Sims. Like I said, I think he’s athletic but I don’t think he’s a physical freak in any way. And I’ll say it again, there’s so much more to defense than being athletic as a C. You look at the best defensive C’s in the league, it’s not a vertical pop contest at all.

He has more potential to improve given his situation, but he’s also significantly further away imo. It’s his high potential for growth that makes him an NBA prospect at all, but given he’s so far away I wouldn’t say that equates to actually being a high potential player.

The idea of him being a late first isn’t horrible IMO, but I like a lot of other guys on the board. You also know what I think about drafting for need, so no need to rehash that. The general idea of addressing defense through backup C is pretty questionable though.
