What's new

my last dumb phone

I like the way this uses Orange and Blue! I guess your smart phone is an ILLINI fan - no wonder you think it's smart.
;-)

I don't really go down there very often, so I don't know from experience, but here's the map. The blue is 4G, orange is 3G:

I have a "smartphone", but I use it like a dumb phone.
I never get on the net, or use any of it's crazy gadgets.
I hate phones, and would rather talk in person.
I know, I'm crazy.
I like to spend time with my wife, and talk to her. That is usually when we may talk about what is on our calendars, and what we need from the store.
I would rather play a board game and interact with people, instead of play a game on a phone, or interact with a sim.
I don't like to use my phone as a metal detector at the beach to find hidden treasures.
I don't pay for any data plans, dont use facebook, or twitter...... and life is amazingly good.

Moe, may I join your club?

Haven't owned a cell phone in about 6 years. Never paid for one, and never plan to.

I have a home phone! Woot! Er, wait.. am I part of the crowd in this thread if I'm even further behind?

I would ask Moe, but I would think even the Geico caveman could be in the club if he didn't have a smartphone.

How do I sign up for the club? I have kind of a smart/dumb hybrid. It's actually an AT&T pay as you go phone. I'm on the $2/per day plan for unlimited talk/text on the days I actually use it. It's got bluetooth, so I'm hands free if/when I get a call in the car (essential here in California). I'll maybe use it 2-3 times a week - and if there's an emergency like car trouble.

I'm pretty much like JazzSpazz except for talking with my wife. I just try to ignore her whenever possible;-)

boy this topic has been dormant for a while, but I saw the article and had to post it...

Me and all the other dinosaurs are pretty happy living with our extinct technology :-)

...Most consumers rush to get the hot new cellphone—every 17 months on average, according to J.D. Power and Associates, a marketing-information company. Device makers like Apple, Motorola and Nokia—as well as cellphone carriers—constantly advertise the latest models and fastest service. Still, the holdouts cling to obsolete models with clunky designs.

These die-hards say they are reducing waste and like sidestepping costly service contracts. Some like the simplicity of phones with few functions, says Anthony Scarsella, chief gadget officer at Gazelle, a Boston-based reseller of electronic gear....

Good bump, actually.

Salty, why the F does my T-Mobil Blackberry Bold suck so bad? Wait, the phone is fine, but the internet stuff is ridiculous. I pay for some super duper plan and speed, but I honestly can't load 90% of the pages I try to open on the first try. I get, "There was a communications failure" or some other nonsense about not being able to find a server, etc. and I have to click the link/webpage/whatever again. I usually have to go through this bull **** four or five times before I get the page I want, and then it's usually like cold tar. I've called tmobile and googled all this ****, but nothing seems to work. It does it on my wireless at home as well as when I'm on TM's network.

Help me, SaltyOne Kenobi, you're my only hope.

Blackberry uses their own network and servers. The carrier (T-Mobile in your case) just connects you to the Blackberry server, which then connects you to the internet. That's why the problem also happens on your WiFi, because your home internet connection is only connecting it to the same Blackberry server.

This is one of the reasons I think Blackberry sucks. There are too many potential problems. Blackberry has had a few nationwide outages when one of their servers goes down.

T-Mobile probably can't help you. Especially if it's doing it on your home WiFi too. You probably need to call Blackberry support. Or even better would be to get a new phone. There are plenty of Android phones that work on T-Mobile's 4G. Pretty much all of them will be way better than any Blackberry, and even give your computer a run for its money when it comes to web browsing.

but that's also the reason that so many businesses prefer blackberrys and provide them to their employees - there's much more control over how the device is used. Most people I know with Blackberrys only have them because their employer is providing (and paying for) it

You can have that control with pretty much any phone these days. Blackberry was the first, but everyone does it now.

The difference is with a Blackberry you HAVE to use the Blackberry server. With almost any other phone you don't need any proprietary server to connect you to the net.

Many businesses use Blackberry because they were the first with push email, exchange sync, and all that. They're comfortable with the platform because they have been using it for so long. But every smartphone has push email and exchange sync nowadays.

Blackberry does let you control which apps are installed on the phone better than most platforms though, so there may be something to that.

Well, this is disheartening news. I didn't pay a fortune for this phone, but it wasn't cheap. I imagine I could sell it and use the proceeds to get another phone? If so, then what would you suggest I get SirSalty? Remember, think cheap -- I don't even know what an app is, and I really only use my phone right now to update my google calendar, text, make movies of my kids (that's actually damn fun) and browse the webz.

Thanks for the help in advance, Sire.

Guys i survived with a 10 dollar phone from virgin mobile for 2 years in high school, then another samsung 30 dollar phone for another 2. This is my first year with an evo 3d from sprint and I'm loving it (when I get signal). I guess in the end, I can survive either way if I really have to cause I'm cheap and frugal for the most part. Almost bought my mom a smartphone, then i'd realized she wouldn't know how to use it. My parents barely had cell phones for the past 2 years that I pay monthly for. My family in Laos and my grandpa had cell phones on the farm five years before my whole family got it. LOL

BTW, I REALLY WANT THE GALAXY II , anyone wanna donate money? haha.

Fact: I have never bought a cell phone. If it doesn't come free with the contract (and I'm not saying a 2 for 1), I don't get it.

If it wasn't for my wife buying all the available gizmos, including computers, I'd have none. I considered it a complete cave-in to her modernity all the way, and the only reason I even have phone service at all is because she said so. If I get stuck in the desert, I'm good to walk out.

Wifey changed all that. Now I'm too fat to walk out.

Android is by far the best for google calendar. It's the best all around at the moment. But for google calender it's way above the rest.

Look for an Android phone that works on T-Mobile's 4G. Check KSL and Ebay, used ones are cheap.

The Exhibit 2 is only $200 brand new with no contract, so I'm sure you could get a used one for cheap. The Galaxy S 2 is about as good as it gets, but they're not cheap. The Sensation is pretty good too, but not dirt cheap either.

You can sell your Blackberry on Ebay to recoup some of the cost too.

For cheap though, you probably want to look for a used Exhibit 2. It's a pretty good bang for the buck brand new, so used will be the best value. And it's way better that any Blackberry. The web browsing is pretty good, camera is pretty decent quality, and if you ever get into apps (which you will) Android has tons of free ones. The device is much faster than a Blackberry too, you'll love it.
